Amazon.co.uk Review

A leaner, meaner, and altogether scarier entry in the Paranormal Activity horror franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 is a well-oiled scare machine that delivers the gut-wrenching shocks of the original 2007 film.

Fans may initially groan over the plot, which takes the tried-and-true sequel tack of flashing back to the "origin" of the first film's phenomena;  we discover that the diabolical entity that plagued sisters Katie and Kristi (Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden, both of whom return in "found footage" clips) has been after the girls since their adolescent years in the late '80s. There's an attempt to provide a reason for the haunting, which may or may not rankle franchise fans; its inclusion, however, doesn't interrupt the barrage of shudders and armrest-clutching frights encountered by the girls' father (Chris Smith), a wedding videographer whose skill with cameras uncovers glimpses of the monstrous presence in his house.

Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) have a keen understanding of how to use the corners of their image to milk maximum suspense from a static shot or slow-moving pan, as shown in one of the film's most memorable scenes, in which a camera mounted on an oscillating fan first suggests and then reveals a terrifying moment.

As before, the human element is the weakest link, though Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown, as young Katie and Kristi, respectively, are convincingly hysterical at the proper moments. But one doesn't attend a Paranormal Activity film to see fine acting. The franchise is a thrill ride/rite of passage/endurance test for its loyal fans, and PA 3 has the horsepower to stand alongside the other pictures. --Paul Gaita

DVD Description

The Paranormal Activity franchise continues with this third outing from Paramount Pictures. Oren Peli and Jason Blum return to produce the highly secretive feature, with Catfish's directing duo of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman taking on the helming duties.

Despite the hostility surrounding the series, I'd definitely call myself a fan of the Paranormal Activity series. I loved the first and how the second tied into it. But with the third in the franchise, I'm beginning to think they're running out of ideas. After all, just how far can you take this premise?

The film goes back to the 1980s and explores the childhood of the main character of the series, Katie. Unfortunately this third offering delivers nothing new to the franchise. It's more of the same loud noises, moving objects and dragging people across the floor.

Since this instalment is set in Katie's past you'd be forgiven for assuming the event of the house fire mentioned in the first film would be addressed. Sadly, no. Very few questions left over from the previous movies are answered and the whole plot appears a little disjointed.

I can't put into words how disappointed I was with Paranormal Activity 3, especially since I loved the first two. I hope they end the series here.

My husband and i were holidaying in a log cabin in the forest of dean and they had a in cabin entertainment package availiable one of those pay per night watch as many films as you like types and as we were away and dont normally get the chance to watch films we thought why not have a browse .I quite fancied a horror tale and thought it would be fun to watch something whilst staying in the middle of the woods in the pitch black .
I have never heard of paranormal activity before and knew nothing about the first and second film so i tell you i went into watching this completely ignorant of the prequels .

Now Im a child of the 80's and can honestly say i grew up watching all those banned gore, slasher, video nasties on a regular basis .
With the exception of maybe 2 that i can think of off the top of my head (The Entity and The Exocist) i can honestly put my hand on my heart and say i have never been bothered by horror films.I could watch them on my own anytime of the day and still have no trouble sleeping in the pitch black without worry.
Ive always been able to talk myself round during "jump" moments with "its only a film its only a film " as i am sure alot of you do the same .

However, this is the first film i have ever seen that has absolutely scared the living daylights out of me ...Now i dont know if it has anything to do with the fact that i have a young daughter of my own now and the film concentrates alot on the little girls or because i am older and maybe have turned into a bit of a wuss since my younger years but i can honestly say this is the creepiest , tension building playing on your mind sitting on the edge of your seat film EVER.
Its is disturbing beyond any film i have ever watched ..
Its creepiness holds no bounds , its not your typical things that go bump in the night type of movie , because the creepy goings on happen all through the film at different times of the day and night this is what i believe gives it a different edge .
The movie takes place in a modern run of the mill new build house where a woman and her two daughters live with the mothers boyfriend who makes wedding videos for a living .He likes to record things all the time in and around the house and family and after an earthquake erupts, he discovers that an invisible figure emerges from the dust. So naturally, he wants to keep recording to find out what it is, and what he discovers is that its an invisible friend named Tobi who has some connection with the little daughters. At this point im thinking ok this is how its going to roll but
Then it begins ...I dont want to say anymore because of spoilers .....

The stragetically placed home video camera on top of a revolving fan that moves slowly from the dining room to the kitchen then back again and so on had me squeezing my husbands hand on several occasions .More than once i had to have one hand grabbing hubby and the other over my eyes pathetic i know i found myself screaming out loud at certain points and jumping out of my seat.
Normally i would find this a rather amusing experience and quiet thrilling once the film has finished but i was left throughly exhausted at the end and badly creeped out .As far as doing its job was concerned Paranormal Activity 3 does what it says on the box ..it was (for me anyway ) terrifying and i quote "It was like a roller coaster ride that I couldn't get out of." It's really that intense. That statement sums it all up exactly.I found myself doing a chimpanzee swing from light switch to lightswitch because i just didnt want to be in the dark and it played on my mind for hours after ..maybe i am just a wuss LOL

I have since read alot of reviews on this film most of which are saying its not as good as the first 2 but if like me you have never heard of the first 2 and want to be scared witless then i would highly recommend this especially if you like jumping out of our seat and having the hairs on the back of your neck stand up on regular intervals 5 * rating just for the sheer scare factor of it enjoy ...

I will freely admit being disserpointed and in some parts bored to death waiting for something to happen by parts one and two, but number 3 got stuck stright in with the scares and keeps its strangle hold throughout, it had me jumping even when the camera switched from 1 room to another, grate film, creates a really unsettling atmosphere when you watch it, a real twist ending, and left me wanting more

Hmmmm... Wasn't great.
Well, it wasn't great, I'm not gonna lie. Also, it wasn't even remotely linked to the first film, even though, it was it's "Prequel"... Conclusion? Not that great really.
