As the lyric from Cobain points out, being paranoid is not so much about believing that one is under threat but rather the reason for thinking such. Freeman and Freeman point out that paranoia is the unrealistic belief that other people what to harm us. And this topic is the subject of the book and crucially, why paranoia has become a pressing problem in today's society. The book is a cutting edge survey of recent psychological and epidemiological research into paranoia and addresses the relatively recent understanding of paranoia such that it is now no longer viewed as being confined to those with psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia. Rather, paranoia can occur in a normal, non-helpseeking population and is now thought to be on a continuum with those more pronounced delusions of persecution seen in psychotic disorders. The book is very well written, full of literary and clinical vignettes, engaging and authoritative: as someone who did the Camberwell walk for almost 8 years, it is fantastic to see its effect on our thinking in print!
