Product Description

Q - September 2011 - ***

"Parallel Universe features 12 previously unavailable tracks as bait, but it's the original singles and album cuts that best show off their peculiarly English brand of acid rock. At over 15 minutes long, You Souldn't Do That attains a trance-like ambience, while the guitar riff to both Master Of The Universe and the 1972 Top 5 hit Silver Machine became eureka moments for innumerable punk and metal bands."

Record Collector - September 2011 - ****

"EMI have peformed an exemplary job of maintaining the Liberty/United Artists portion of the Hawkwind catalogue via budget editions and expanded remasters. They've unearthed the 1999 Party live set and provided last year's Hawkwind At The BBC compilation. Now here's something akin to the summation of this cusodianship mixed with a fascinating glimpse of how different some tracks might have been in a titular parallel universe. Hawkfans pinch yourselves: you are not "only dreaming"."

This is an excellent compilation of great Hawkwind classics with a sprinkling of rare and unreleased tracks and with a price tag like this, for a three CD set, makes it good value for money too.

The selection of tracks for the new or casual Hawkwind buyer is very good but I'll deal with just the rare and unreleased stuff here. The original Mono mixes of "Hurry On Sundown" & Mirror of Illusion" are not exactly previously unreleased but as far as I know have never been released on CD. The 1970 version of "You Know Your Only Dreaming" is the same song but done in a very different style to the version that ended up on the "In search Of Space" album. Although it's a really good version you can understand why it was left off the first album as it's just sounds very similar in style to the two vocal tracks on there. "The reason Is" is a different version than the one on the first album while Be Yourself is a different mix with non of the overdubs added to the album version. "Hog Farm" is an instrumental out take, in two parts while "Kiss Of The Velvet Whip is a 1971 re make of an old classic, much heaver and very much in the style of the other "In Search Of Space" tracks recorded around the same time. "Take What You Can" is the same song as the one released on the "Weird Tapes" as "Make What You Can" but I'm not sure yet if it's the same take. Even if it is it still runs over two minutes longer. "Seven By Seven" is the original version with alternative vocals by Robert Calvert while "Brainbox Pollution" is a much longer version than the original. "Ejection" is not previously unreleased and appeared on the DFL album as a bonus track but deserves a mention because it has a much cleaner sounding intro to the one on the album. It's so easy" & You'd Better Believe It" are great studio version of songs that where represented on the "Hall Of The Mountain Grill" Album and "Psychedelic Warlords" single as live versions. With studio versions already recorded and sounding as good as this it's hard to see why live versions where used instead of these. "Wind Of Change" is another alternate version and brings the unreleased part of this set to a close.

All in All a great set with a few unreleased tracks you might only want to listen to once but most you will want to listen to again and again.

The "Sunshine Special" EP also listed in one of the other revues is on Amazon as MP3 download only with previously unreleased versions of "Hurry On Sundown" & "Kiss Of The Velvet Whip" along with three other tracks. My only criticism of the whole package is Whay could these two unreleased tracks not be included in the 3 CD set in lossless quality? That aside this set is a must have for any Hawkwind fan.

Worth the purchase price just for the studio versions of Make What You Can and It's So easy. Every few years old Hawkwind material turns up out of the blue to remind us what a fantastic act Hawkwind were at their prime. As soon as EMI sort out their ownership wrangles with Warrior on the Edge of Time I'm sure more material will follow. All Hawkfans need to buy this!

Hawkwind - Parallel Universe 3CD inc. 12 Unreleased Tracks
====
HAWKWIND: PARALLEL UNIVERSE-A LIBERTY / UNITED ARTISTS ANTHOLOGY 1970-1974
( Triple CD Journey Through the Mind-Altering Space-Rock of Hawkwind / 12 Unreleased Tracks )
----
Following the release last year of 'Hawkwind At The BBC 1972', EMI Records are to release: 'Parallel Universe' - A Triple CD that is an extensive journey through Hawkwind's mind-altering space rock
This exciting 3CD Anthology set is due from EMI Records in August 2011
'Parallel Universe' is a significant release that as well as containing a good cross-section of the band's output over the first five years, (the band was actually formed in 1969), pulls together a slew of material that's previously been available as Bonus Tracks on the EMI remasters from a few years back, plus a selection of Previously Unreleased United Artists - era tracks including studio versions of: 'It's So Easy' and 'You'd Better Believe It', a very different studio cut of 'Wind Of Change', alternative vocals on a studio recording of 'Seven By Seven' and new songs: 'Hog Farm' and what's listed as being a previously unreleased track: 'Take What You Can', which actually appeared on a 'Weird Tapes' release under the title: 'Make What You Can', although at this stage we don't know if it is the same recording or another previously unknown version
This package of great tracks is something that no serious Hawkwind fan or collector should be without
These are the seminal recordings of the band - the essence of what Hawkwind was at that time, and was all about
The sleeve notes for this highly anticipated releases are by Nik Turner
