This is another magical trip through the 'folk fantasy' world of Loreena McKennitt, and well worth exploring. There are wonderfully spooky shadows to 'Samhain Night': the spirits of the otherworld are well captured in the haunting musical arrangement. Other standouts include the tragic love ballad 'Annachie Gordon', with McKennitt's anguished vocals soaring with pleading, loss and regret, throughout this tale of faithfulness and bad timing. 'Standing Stones' is set in Orkney, though the standing stone referred to no longer exists (wonder where she heard of it?), and is another wonderfully fraught tale of forbidden love, set against the dark night, Loreena's vocal keening like a knife through the darkness.
Perhaps the outstanding track is 'Dickens Dublin', with the story of the Christmas stable delivered by a young Irish voice, while Loreena's counterpoint to this is the tragically heartfelt tale of a young homeless waif, searching wearily for a roof over her head, away from the winter chill.
As ever, the vocal performance is spellbinding, complemented by some lusciously sympathetic musical arrangements and performances, and the usual high standard production. Lovers of McKennitt needn't hesitate; if you don't know her work, but appreciate superb, almost operatic quality vocals, and enjoy dark tales of myth and imagination, this is a good introduction to that world. Quality all the way..
