Book Description

26 May 2009 Charlotte & Thomas Pitt Novels
In the posh London street of Paragon Walk, an unspeakable crime is committed: A young woman is brutally raped and murdered.

Once again, that incomparable team of sleuths Inspector Thomas Pitt and his young wife, Charlotte, set themselves against a vicious murderer. As the elegant masks of the wellborn suspects slip, it becomes appallingly clear that something ugly lurks behind the handsome façades of Paragon Walk–something that may lead to more scandal, and more murder.

Review

‘What distinguishes Perry’s books is her incisive and imaginative analysis of character and conscience’
The Lady

‘Her narrative prose… confers on her intriguing story (The Hyde Park Headsman) a conviction which adds spice to an account of vice, domestic violence and shattered respectability’
Oxford Times

From the Back Cover

In the affluent London street of Paragon Walk and unspeakable and baffling crime was committed: a young woman was raped and murdered. Once again the incomparable team of Inspector Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, set themselves against a vicious killer. As the elegant masks of the Aristocratic Suspects began to slip, it became appallingly clear that something ugly lurked behind the handsome facades of Paragon Walk.

The everyday miseries and small sordid secrets burgeoned above and below stairs were as nothing compared to the threat of further violence, as there appeared to be no clear clues to follow. Was it the work of a Madman? Was it a game of the idle rich that got out of hand? Charlotte Pitt's personal connection to one resident enabled her to ask the questions nobody wanted to hear…and that led to a shocking revelation.

'The Pitt books are characterised by well-observed period detail…and intense scrutiny of family secrets'
ROBERT MCCRUM

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a new story 16 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a rerelease of one of the earlier stories. I read Paragon walk in 1986 and enjoyed the story immensely but if you are following the series through and you are wondering if the title rings a bell you are right it does. This is the old days Thomas Pitt is still just an inspector and Emily is married to Lord Ashworth. Still a cracking read but you could become confused if you don't realise it's one of the early novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paragon Walk 1 Nov 2009

Again, another excellent Pitt Charlotte mystery. Nice to see Charlotte mature here and not be as hot-headed. Interesting cast of characters sympathetically drawn by Perry. The book does seem to end rather abruptly with the mystery solved literally in the last couple of pages, but still a satisfying read.

Anne Perry does it again. Another well researched novel in her Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. This time the reader enters the world of rape and murder. Perrys novel also covers the social etiquette of how the upper and middle classes in the Victorian era try to hide their feelings and what really goes on in their homes from other people.
