Product Description

Product Description

The first in a trilogy patterned on the classic "myth" and set in present day Oxford and Scotland, and the Celtic otherworld. It features a young American who goes in search of a fellow-student who has disappeared while investigating a cairn. The author has also written "The Pendragon Cycle". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

In an ancient cairn in the wilds of Scotland, Oxford student Simon Rawson vanishes, seemingly into thin air. Where has he gone? Unsettling signs -- a mysterious Green Man, a Celtic circle chalked on the sidewalk -- point his roommate, Lewis Gillies, to an impossible answer . . . and an incredible destiny on the other side of a doorway between worlds. There, where Celtic champions, magic, and treachery weave the beautiful and brutal land called Albion, Lewis finds Simon. And there, schooled as a warrior, he is thrust to the front of a titanic struggle between light and darkness -- a hideous, onrushing darkness that would devour not merely a kingdom, but two worlds. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This trilogy from S. Lawhead has a life of its own and it will be extremely difficult to surpass it. Lawhead manages to absorb the reader in a way that I only found with Tolkien and I was marvelled with this Celtic story. It is impossible to describe its beauty without reading it. With no reservations whatsoever, I say this is the best story of its kind ever written.

Quite Wonderful 27 Aug 2003
By David Cranson VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read the first 2 of the trilogy when they were first published about 12/13 years ago. I rediscovered them recently and have stated reading them again. This first book - as far as my vague memory goes - lives up to my expectations. The imagery, the wonderful flowing prose. The descriptions of the 'Otherworld', the ideas of pride (in the true sense of the word) and honour. The spirituality which is knitted throughout the book.

As a person from Scotland, it fair stirs the Celtic blood(!)

A brilliant story from a brilliant story-teller. The ongoing 'evolution' of characters, not seen any better than in the change from academics to full blown warriors, is as true to life as it gets. The tight lines of prose and attention to detail bring the whole thing vividly to life!

A 'fantasy' world never seemed so real since JRR Tolkien.

Very much recommended.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is easily one of the best books ever written, for those of you who have read "Taliesin," "Arthur", "Pendragon", "Grail" etc. believe me, this book is even better, as is the rest of the Albion trilogy. Not to spoil the plot too much, but by the end I was in tears.

Great
I love this whole series, in my view the best of the series by Stephen Lawhead. I was given the middle one of the series first but thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

Slow starter develops into classic fantasy
It's some years since I read Lawhead's Arthurian books, and the early chapters of this one I found disappointing. It takes a long time to get going. Read more

Tolkien-esque...
A fantastic fantasy tale containing the obligatory battle between light and darkness. The text provides vivid imagery and a well researched, well paced plot.

Storytelling at its best
I loved this trilogy, though fantasy books aren't normally my thing. The storytelling is just perfection and the scene setting really fires the imagination. Read more

Very good.
Lives up to expectations of the 'Pendragon Cycle', continuing Lawhead's well researched interest in Celtic myth.

It gets better with 'The Silver Hand'

An exellent book that absorbs the imagination
