5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, light reading 19 Jun 2013
By Annette Mackey - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
The Paradise Valley books revolve around the life of Emily Parker. Though they qualify as murder mysteries, I would recommend these books to readers who enjoy a good romance with plenty of sizzle, but no smut. Fun, light reading that definitely brings you back wanting more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Am I missing something? 22 July 2013
By AddictedToBooks - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
To date, I've no idea if this series is meant to be in the Christian fiction genre. Although well written, I find it frustrating that the author doesn't delve deeper into the characters and their flaws--not only this, but the relationship between Emily and Colin seems to be that of two teens who are still virgins. At least, this is how it's been so far--and I'm up to the second book.

The other thing that really got to me was the unrealistic reaction of young widow, Emily. She only lost her husband 6 months previously in a rather traumatic way, and already she's dating at the behest of her friends, who all seem too perfect to be true. This makes Emily appear as someone who has no depth of character. After all, she was in love with her husband and then she's suddenly dating some hot, young detective? Not at all believable for a so-called grieving widow.

The first mystery had great potential, even though I found it predictable and knew straight away who the murderer was. The second, went round and round in circles; the regurgitating plotline left a lot to be desired, but at least, the identity of the murderer was unexpected, so this is a good thing.

The thing I am enjoying at this point (and which keeps me reading) is the actual background mystery of what really happened to Emily's husband. This seems to be stretching across all three books, and it's the only real interesting factor in the series.

I think these stories would have been excellent had the author made the characters more human, more flawed, more emphatic, more vulnerable, and with real, everyday problems. As they are portrayed now, the characters have no depth, and I cannot relate to them at all. Not only this, but unless this is a Christian romance/mystery, I think the two main protagonists should stop acting like young teens and take their relationship to the next level. At present, the relationship is very unrealistic and almost mechanical.

Finally, I find the interchange of mystery jumping to teen romance, jumping back to mystery again very distracting. The story doesn't weave at all well. It's a shame because these stories have great potential, but they need to be further developed in my opinion.

The two stars I gave on this review are for the well-written, well-edited stories (very few typos), plus the background story of Emily's deceased husband.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the fact it's a set! 18 Jun 2013

I love the fact that this series has been boxed as a set. It makes it easier to gift give and you can't beat the price!
I have read each one and one of the things that stands out to me about this series is that it is one I can recommend to everyone, especially my mother. Most of the books I read aren't 'Mom friendly' so it's nice to have come across a series I can read and share with her.
The Paradise Valley Series has a wholesome quality, with some great mystery, suspense and fun characters. You really second guess some of the relationships and people in these novels. I like a book that has the ability to throw you off and keep you guessing without being too predictable. This series has that quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Mystery Series 19 Jun 2013
By Cathy-J'sGrams - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Some of the most suspenseful romantic stories are now available in a boxed set -- what a great gift idea! While reading the Paradise Valley Mystery series, I have grown to love each of the characters and the amazing way Ms. Burroughs can tell a mystery story -- she incorporates so much intrigue that keeps you guessing and those pages turning while creating her characters with such heart and soul. There's usually just the right touch of heartwarming romance too. Ms. Burroughs has an amazing way of intertwining mystery, crime, romance and humor in her stories. I highly recommend the Paradise Valley Mysteries to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Romantic, Thrilling, and filled with Mystery 29 May 2013
By Avid Reader - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I have read all of these books, and love each one.

The Scent of Lies, introduces us to the main character Emily, who is still suffering from the loss of her husband's unsolved murder case. She finds in the closet (on her husband's side), which she has ignored for over half a year, a key. This key unlocks Emily's inner PI, so much so she decides it's time to take over her late husband's Private Investigation business. She gets caught up in a murder case.

All her friends are out to set her up, help her move on from loss, but when she meets her new "interest" sparks fly, but not in the way you might think.

Heart of Lies proved itself to be an excellent sequel, you do not feel as though you are re-reading the first book. Since you already know the characters, the author moves into deeper story, developing the relationship between Emily and Detective Colin. The scenes are intense, but remain clean.

Chain of Lies deals with an outsider who has swindled his way into the lives of many in the Paradise Valley community. Emily must tread lightly, she doesn't trust this outsider, but since one of her closest friends is in love with him, she must walk the fine line of being true to a friend, yet true to her nature of suspicion.

The Edge of Lies, although this is pre-quel and short story, it should be read last. This dives into the story of Emily and how she met her husband. You definitely want to know the characters better before reading this book, it just sets it up for a better read.

Debra Burroughs is an excellent author, driven to please her readers by providing relatable characters, real romance, and true friendships.
