More About the Author

John Milton was born on 9 December 1608 in Cheapside,
London. He published little until the appearance of Poems of Mr
John Milton, both English and Latin in 1646, when he was 37. By
this time he was deeply committed to a political vocation, and
became an articulate and increasingly indispensable spokesman for
the Independent cause. He wrote the crucial justifications for the
trial and execution of Charles I, and, as Secretary for Foreign
Tongues to the Council of State, was the voice of the English revolution
to the world at large. After the failure of the Commonwealth
he was briefly imprisoned; blind and in straitened circumstances
he returned to poetry, and in 1667 published a ten-book version
of Paradise Lost, his biblical epic written, as he put it, after 'long
choosing, and beginning late'. In 1671, Paradise Regained and
Samson Agonistes appeared, followed two years later by an expanded
edition of his shorter poems. The canon was completed in 1674, the
year of his death, with the appearance of the twelve-book Paradise
Lost, which became a classic almost immediately. His influence on
English poetry and criticism has been incalculable.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1 stars for these kindle versions 7 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have downloaded two kindle versions but apparently can only write one review - so for the first version which I do retain, I do just pretty much read the passages I like, very much as I did at school! But this literally is just the text with no notes, references, further reading etc. It was free so for just the text it's fine but I would like to have references and notes just the same.
The second version with notes by a demonologist promises annotations. Not only are there No annotations but every single line is numbered on the left hand side which makes it impossible to read.
I would be very happy to pay for a good Kindle copy with notes, annotations etc. but there doesn't seem to be one. Tell me if you find one please!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for me 6 Sep 2013

Sorry to all the people who love this kind of book... I was fascinated to see what it was like, but it reminded me too much of Chaucer, and I'm sorry but I can't go through that experience again

4.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous work! 21 Feb 2013

As an Anglican priest I wanted to refresh my knowledge of this work for my church work. It never fails to rivet me, by its eloquent poetry and analysis of the story of Adam and Eve and their "fall from grace'. It's hard going in places but well worth the effort, especially if you come new to it. A parable of sin even for our mordern times.

Loved the fact that the dictionary highlight still worked with pretty much any word in the text on my kindle.
