Reviews

Thriller directed by John Stockwell. American college student Alex (Josh Duhamel), his younger sister Bea (Olivia Wilde) and their close friend Amy (Beau Garrett) are backpacking through Brazil. They meet up with similar companions: wild and crazy British mates Finn (Desmond Askew) and Liam (Max Brown), together with Australian traveler Pru (Melissa George), on a cross country bus. They barely survive after it crashes off a cliff. Further mishaps occur due to becoming stranded on a beach by so-called 'friendly locals', some of whom have deprived them of all their possessions. Searching for sympathetic police, they meet familiar face Kiko (Agles Steib), who offers to lead them to sanctuary in a house deep in the jungle. But upon reaching this supposed safe haven they discover that their 'saviours' have other, more sinister intentions...

Ask yourself this question: do you like `slasher' films? If the answer is yes, then you probably enjoy daft youngsters getting stalked by killers, women running around in very little clothes, blood and gore and, of course, the most virtuous of the group surviving. Therefore, you will also probably like Paradise Lost, as it ticks all those boxes.

There's nothing new here - a group of annoyingly fit backpackers goes to Brazil, only to stumble into somewhere they really wish they hadn't. I won't go into detail about what exactly the `nasties' want from them, but it's no advert for the Brazilian tourist board.

Saying the film is just `average' would be a little unfair. It's definitely better than the vast majority of B-movie, cash-in, slasher films, but it's no masterpiece. Basically, if you enjoy the genre, you should enjoy this one.

Alex and his sister Bea, and her friend Amy meet other travellers and become friends after an accident with their bus.

They follow a track through the woods and find a hidden paradise. They decide to stay in the place drinking with the locals and they meet Brazilian teenager Kiko.

They are drugged and when they wake up, they are practically naked, with all their belongings, clothes, money, jewels, passports, backpacks stolen.

They walk to a small village trying to find a police station, they get into trouble with the dwellers and they are helped by their acquaintance Kiko, who leads them to his uncle's isolated well-equipped cabin in the woods to wait for the next bus two days later.

At night, Kiko's "uncle" arrives with his friends and the group discloses the sinister intentions of the newcomers.....

Released at the same time as Hostel, and during the reign of 'Saw', this is one of those movies that got ignored by the public, due to bad press and the act that most people thought it would be another torture porn movie.

There are violent scenes, but its so much more than a torture porn movie. For a start, the characters really are believable, and you do care for one or two of them, and also a few grate on you.

Desmond Askew is particular irritating, especially if you are from his side of the world. He is a typical cockney wide boy, and it irks me to think that film makers as still typecasting us Brits as this awful parody.

It loss a few points for this, but otherwise, it's a solid movie, with really beautiful locations, and a swimming scene that is pure Oceana to the eyes.

Ignore the fact that it's classed as torture porn and enjoy it for what it is, a film about the dangers of travelling and straying off the path.

What more do you want?....beautiful beach, isolated beach bar, hunks in shorts, bikini clad girls, plenty of drinks, loud music and dancing….. Well some horror for a start. The first hour runs like a cheap holiday promo for a secluded beach holiday— Then it turns sour as 6 friends find themselves in a ‘Wrong Turn’ situation meets ‘The Descent’ with a bit of ‘Saw’ thrown in for the squeamish.
The film is slow to get into its stride, building up the interplay between the main characters, whilst teasing with flashes of suspense as it lays the basic plot out. Its only an hour in when the ‘horror’ aspect cuts in for the next quarter of an hour and the rest is just a question of will anyone get away or not.
This is definitely not a ‘must see’ but is more a ‘worth seeing’ movie, but others offer far more scares and surprises. Its well filmed and acted but lacks true horror being more of a suspense type thriller than gore fest slasher being the kind of movie that becomes quite scary if you can imagine yourself in that situation, but it all comes too late in the film. That all said, the disc main menu offers play, scene selection, special features [make –up effect & deleted scenes] and set up [basically subtitles or for hard of hearing].
If its ‘in your face’ slasher gore you’re looking for, or the suspense of ‘Vacancy’, then avoid this, if it’s a fun holiday that goes wrong, but is light on scares and heavy on beautiful locations, then this could be for you. A decent *** rating but to give four would be pushing it as its not what’s advertised.

A group of young people on holiday in Brazil narrowly survive a bus accident and are then left stranded in the middle of nowhere for 10 hours while waiting for the next bus to arrive. They do a little exploring and come across a beach and a bar and make the most of their time by swimming, drinking and partying. They are then drugged and wake up with all of their belongings stolen. Little do they know that the locals not only want their belongings but also their internal organs.

I had low expectations for this, giving that similar films like Hostel and the more recent Saw film have been nothing more than average, but this wasn't the torture porn horror that I was expecting to see, rather a tense and exciting thriller that was actually quite good.

The storyline was pretty basic but was well executed, building the story up slowly but still managing to keep my interest throughout. It also had a fairly decent reasoning for the killings, rather than just mutilating the tourists for the sake of it. The actual torture scenes were not in it all that much either, so if you have seen the trailer, it is very misleading in that sense, but all the better for it really.

There are some pretty gruesome effects but nothing that hasn't been seen before and there isn't anything at all original about it. However it is a fairly enjoyable horror while it lasts with lots of shocks and scares and plenty of eye-candy too for us guys with some hot young women running about in tiny bikinis for the whole duration of the film.

Overall this is well worth a watch if you like thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat and are genuinely quite scary if you imagine yourself in this kind of situation. Definitely worth a rent, at least.
