Product Description

When Alice Ticino's pony bolts and crashes into a family of strangers, it changes her life. Before long, this lonely girl who has never known love has been befriended by the family and - a dream come true - is allowed to wander freely in their stables, where they train racehorses for other owners. But Alice must stay away from Snatchcorn, a beautiful stallion, so dangerous that it is soon to be put down. Alice finds that she has a special bond with Snatchcorn. Can she save his life by persuading his owner that he can be tamed?

This is a lovely book. It's not as deep or intricate as some of her other books, for example the sublime Blind Beauty, but it is a very sweet story nonetheless. It is the story of eleven year old Alice who lives with her father and servants in Newmarket. She is a lonely child. Her father is undemonstrative and she is not allowed to attend the local school. Her only companions are the two female servants and the stable boy and the much-loved carriage horse Daisy. When she is given permission to ride Daisy to the race meeting one day the horse bolts, carrying her into the path of a local horse-trainer's family and beginning a series of events that lead to the unravelling and reconstruction of Alice's entire life. This is very much a happy ever after sort of book and bears none of the gritty, realistic hallmarks of some of the author's other works for children such as Fly-by-night. It is aimed more at younger readers and has a rather fairytale feel to it in the style of a Cinderella story. Not what I expected but enjoyable and entertaining. K M Peyton is a brilliant storyteller, and never disappoints. The fact that she is still writing is cause for celebration in itself. Not really a pony book but definitely worth reading.
