4.0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite but still excellent 11 Dec 2011
By Rachel
Format:Paperback
I was surprised to find that this was probably my least favourite of Beth Wiseman's novels so far, but it's still an excellent story! I think the dip in my enjoyment of this series at the fourth instalment could be attributed to how young the protagonist, Linda, is. Her youthfulness and naivety sometimes made it difficult to relate to her. At times she could be quite immature, which didn't settle well with the fact she was constantly thinking about getting married to Stephen, and ultimately made me wonder whether she was really old enough to be a wife and mother. I loved reading about Josie and Mary Ellen reconciling their differences, even if this was only a small part of the novel. A lot of the novel focused on Josie's spiritual journey, and readers of my reviews will know that conversion plots aren't exactly a favourite of mine, but Josie's was interesting to read. I also loved that Beth displayed how powerful prayer and healing can be, topics which can sometimes be a bit taboo among certain Christian circles. God still heals, even in the twenty-first century, and even among the Amish! So although I didn't always relate to Linda due to her youth, I did thoroughly enjoy this novel and will be looking out for the opportunity to read the final book in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for young readers 9 Jun 2010
By Sharon LaMothe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I had a young friend read Plain Paradise by Beth Wiseman for this book review. As you can see from her comments below this book is aimed at young adults and the story mainly focuses on the mother/daughter relationships that are formed in the teen years. One of the reasons I personally thought this book would be interesting to me was the topic of adoption. The teenage girl, Linda, was adopted and not told until her biological mother wanted to meet her. This was a secret that was not shared with her as a child and came as a shock as her adoptive parents were forced to tell her of how she became a part of their family and community.

Beth Wiseman is the best-selling author of the Daughters of the Promise series -- Plain Perfect, Plain Pursuit, and Plain Promise. She is contracted with Thomas Nelson Publishing for ten Amish novels and three novellas - releasing into 2013.

As she puts it, her writing has been "all over the place." As a former newspaper reporter, she was honored by her peers with eleven journalism awards, including first place news writing for The Texas Press Association.

She has been a humor columnist for The 1960 Sun in Houston and published articles in various publications. Those articles included a wide array of topics - an article on premature birth, an article about performance boating, and an article about her mother--a whitewater canoeing enthusiast who still paddles the rivers at the age of 75. However, writing novels is where her heart is. She left her job as a journalist in 2008 to write novels fulltime.

"Writing about the Amish lifestyle within fictional love stories has been a wonderful experience," Beth says. "The Amish and Mennonite contacts I have established in Lancaster County help me to keep the books authentic. These very private people might dress differently, avoid the use of electricity and modern conveniences, but they are just like everyone else. They love, hurt, have daily challenges and struggles, and strive to be the best they can be. An often misunderstood sect of people, it has been a privilege to learn about their ways."

For this review, Karrah Duncan writes "Plain Paradise was a very interesting book. It was very good and I enjoyed reading it a lot. It had everything in it from young romance to death. I would recommend young readers to read Plain Paradise even if they were not interested in Amish life. Although the setting takes place in Lancaster County and the main characters are Amish, the story mostly focuses on the bond between a mother and her daughter, Linda. Linda doesn't know that she is adopted and this story shares what happens when she finds out 17 years later when her birth mother contacts her unexpectedly. Anyone who likes romances with a twist will enjoy Plain Paradise."

Karrah Duncan is fifteen, a sophomore in high school and an avid reader of all types of books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plain Paradise 5 April 2010
By Annette Eldridge - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have read the other books in this series and enjoyed the interaction between characters. Plain Paradise continues the cross-over between books and gives you a glimpse into each family members' lives and personal struggles.

I pre-ordered this book, knowing I wanted to see what happened next in this Amish community. This book dealt with the struggles of adoption, personal worth, and how situations affect families. Linda finds out as she's almost an adult that she's adopted, which causes a turmoil inside her and outside with her relationships with others.

What I enjoy most about the series is that each book shows that no one is perfect and we all need our personal relationship with the Lord. None of the books are 'preaching sermons'; they just cause you to reflect and think.

Great job! I can't wait for the next one to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plain Paradise gave me a glimpse of heaven 15 Mar 2010

I was excited to get this book in the mail the other day. My husband is in the hospital recovering from heart surgery and I brought my book with me and spent the day with him there just like at home. He watched t.v. while I curled up in a chair by him and read. I shared a lot about the book with him It was a wunderbaar day. The characters old and new were outstanding and Beth really drew me in until the very end, especially with her personal comments at the end. Thank you Beth . I can't wait until book 5 and the new series. I will now pass it on to my old order Amish friends from Arthur Il. They are a blessing in my life.
