An adult review 13 Sep 2009
Although I am not a child, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Paradise Barn. Like all children's books, there is interest for grown ups too. The children are poised precariously between childhood and adulthood, coping with difficult feelings such as betrayal and jealousy, challenging issues such as world war and criminality, as well as the basic areas of curiosity common to all children, such as the mechanics of growing older!

Paradise Barn includes humour, excitement, history and also, most importantly, a good story.

Reading a good children's book such as this reminds me pleasurably how it felt to be a child, and also makes me feel connected to other children, past and present. I would recommend Paradise Barn to all readers, both young and old.

I started reading this to my 8 year old, and my 11 year old son immediately got hooked too. Each night they begged me not to stop reading because it was 'SO good!' I got thoroughly involved in the story too - the characters are interesting, different and real, and the author really seems to know how children think. The vividness of the details brought the whole book to life for us all. We felt at the end that we now knew what it must have been like to have lived through the second world war as a child.

All that, and a good measure of mystery, thrills and suspense! I can thoroughly recommend this book, and I hope there will be more of the same from the author. I sent copies to the children of friends for Christmas, convinced that they'd all love it too!

Awesome! 7 April 2010
A Kid's Review
I'm 11 and I read an awful lot. I really enjoyed this. I live near Ely (well, fairly near) and I was at a church Christmas bazar there (courtesy of my mum's friend) last year, and the author's wife was selling copies of it. I GOT IT SIGNED! (he was in the cafe) I've never had a book signed before.

It's really good read, not too dificult, but not so simple that it was awkward. I liked the characters, they all seem very realistic! It's an extremely good plot as well, you know where you are, and something happens on every page. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a change (there are so many world war two books!), aged between 10 to 13 (though my mum read a bit, and liked it, and she's nowhere near that age range!)

It's really well written, and what happens at the end is not what you expect! It's fun, funny and original. I loved it (and still do!!!).

Genre: War and crime and comedy -- children's.
