Paradigms is a gritty story about a brutal world and our hero, Malcolm's, search for some meaning to his life. The descriptions of the tragic Clans, hopelessly grubbing in the ruins for broken relics, are moving as are the losses of friends and civilisations in this bleak world. Malcolm's quest is standard fantasy fare and a good story but the author merges it with a spiritual journey loaded with metaphor that invites all sorts of comparisons to our own world and ways of life. The pace and action as Malcolm makes his escape and explores the world stop the story preaching or patronising. Malcolm is an engaging character I had no trouble committing to from the beginning and the different places and characters along his path are well drawn and completely engaging. A good read.
