Biography

To Cut A Long Story Short

The first time that most Londoners heard the words Spandau Ballet was on the London Weekend Television arts programme Twentieth Century Box, in May 1980. Presented by Danny Baker, Twentieth Century Box was the place you went to for your youth culture fix.

And Baker’s programme was devoted to a new cult, The Cult With No Name, a bunch of soul boys and ... Read more in Amazon's Spandau Ballet Store

I was probably about 11 when I first bought this album from Macro. That was when there were Macros in the UK and when ha'penny sweets still cost a ha'penny. I was a Duranie. Through and through. To buy a Spandau Ballet album was unthinkable - and yet there I was, doing the unspeakable, because I'd fallen in love with the song Round and Round.
18 years later, I'm still a Duranie. I never lost the faith in those guys. However, I don't listen to much of their music from the 80s. That's where Spandau Ballet are different, and in many ways superior. This album is one I know I'll be listening to for the rest of my life.
It isn't just the hits that make this album so great - sure you get Only When You Leave (Live Aid classic), you get Highly Strung (famed for the lines "she used to be a diplomat, but now she's down the laundromat"), you get I'll Fly For You (more lyrical genius "and when you sing to me, the shoobie doos you sing so well") and you get Round and Round... but you get some classic album tracks into the bargain, each of which is worthy of being a hit in it's own right. Nature of the Beast is one of my all time favourite songs, and the other songs are all killers too.
If you're catching up on the 80s, this album can't be missed.

This album is probably the best of Spandau Ballet, shortly followed by Through the Barricades and True.

And iI say the best because all songs are memorable, the band was in the peak of success in 1984 when this album was released, their fashion design was a trend, and so were their videos and their particular musical style. And being what Spandau were then, they made us dream and love music like never before.

Although Through the Barricades in 1986 was a great improvement musically speaking, Parade is a praiseworthy work of art, specially after the mega-hit of their lives, True (not their best song though). Bear in mind that they released almost 1 album per year, and from the very beginning until 1986 it was a constant raise to success, this is a real quality sign.

I just recommend everybody to listen to this album carefully, you will fall in love with it easily. I must admit that this album marked a great part of my life.

Basically, this is one of the earlier albums of Spandau and packed with memorable songs even though not all of them were released. With hits like Highly Strung, Round and Round, Only When You Leave mixed with the other excellent songs such as Nature of the Beast. My favourite here is the wonderful mix of "I'll Fly for You". A definite recommendation for any Spandau fan or those who want to hear more of their early stuff.

I'm not sure what's been going on at EMI and who's in charge. As other reviewers have noted,it sounds like the work experience kids or the tea lady are supervising the current batch of remasters. Many of these re-releases had already been cleaned up just a few years ago,the first three Duran Duran albums are a case in point. They sounded fantastic when re-released in 2003 "Duran Duran / Rio / Seven & The Ragged Tiger (Mini Sleeve Box Set)",so why they needed remastering again has me baffled. When they were recently reissued in deluxe format somebody was asleep at the quality control desk. "Rio" sounds fantastic. The other two albums sound like they've come off a low bit rate mp3 file and that has been used as the master source. The phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. Whilst it's great to have all of the bonus content and the bonus dvd's included in the one box,if they can't get the album right, why bother with the added extras?

So now I turn my attention, with much trepidation,to Spandau Ballet, that other legendary UK 80's band. Their back catalogue has been crying out for the deluxe treatment for years. After reading the reviews for the "Journeys To Glory" re-release I skipped on that one and ordered "Diamond","True" and "Parade" hoping for the best. Well two out of three ain't bad. Diamond and True sound excellent,Parade is truly appalling. Overly compressed, dull and lifeless it has unfortunately been given the same lack of care that the many other EMI remasters have of late.

Some albums play just like 'greatest hits' compilations - and this is a fine example of that from 'Spandau Ballet'. Just eight songs on this - but every one a hit! (chart or otherwise) With so few tracks, this is more of an 'EP' and so the quality has to be good. I feel sure there used to be an unwritten rule of a minimum of nine tracks to make an official 'album' - but perhaps that changed sometime during the 80s? My favourite single from this album was 'Only When You Leave' which should really have given the band another chart-topper, but it only made it to number three in early 1984.

Spandau Ballet were one of the best bands to come out of the eighties who always made quality album material - no fillers here!
