Parachuting/Skydiving is continuously growing & evolving. Dan Poynter and I have attempted to bring to you, the reader (novice or experienced), the latest information available which covers many aspects of the sport. It is our hope that this book will be used by you as a tool to increase your learning about the sport. We have addressed several training and controversial issues openly and honestly, attempting to give full merit to both (or more) viewpoints when more than one right answer is available. This book is a "living document" and will continue to change as the sport changes and grows. Each successive issue (from the very first one that I used to study the sport over 21 years ago) has been written with that philosophy in mind; one of continuous improvement.
We hope you like the book, and if you can think of anything else to add, please feel free to contact one of us with your suggestions!
Blue, Clear, and Calm Skies to y'all.

Great book aimed mainly at beginner and novice jumpers. Lots of information (possibly too much for someone prior to a first jump course though), about all aspects from "what happens on your first jump" to the all-important safety issues (mals, canopy handling etc) to the various disciplines. I read this book a good number of times in my first year or so jumping - it becomes less useful as time goes on but I would heartily recommend it as first choice to any new jumper looking for more info on the sport.
With a cover like that, it's a book you'd be hard pressed to skip over. From the first paragraph to the last page, you learn something new about the sport that we skydivers know and love. Whatever you're into, there's something there for you: freeflying, relative work etc. It breaks down the FJC into logical parts and each section is as comprehensive as it is easy to understand.
A nice touch is the various signatures culled from rec.skydiving (amongst other places). Some of them make you smile, some of them make you think.
I bought this book to prepare for my AFF course this summer. It gives you a very thorough introduction to the sport, from a novices viewpoint. Starting with a breif summary of the basic terminology, continuing with a 50 page section describing your first jump in detail. This book contains sections dealing with everything a novice jumper or student-to-be could want to read up on. Including your progression through the different student levels, a breif history of skydiving, options availible for further progression within the sport, freefall body positions, how to handle more or less any emergency, spotting and of course an extensive section on skydiving equipment. It also contains an extensive glossary and index. The first time you read throgh it, you will probably feel a little overwhelmed by all the information, but it is a great resource to go back to and review as you progress with your training. It is probably the most detailed and accurate text on skydiving available to anybody thinking about taking up skydiving. I highly recommend it!
