Book Description

1 April 2010 Insights
'Parables' are stories Jesus told using characters and events familiar to his audience. But parables are a special kind of story and Jesus used them for his special purposes. William Barclay unlocks these stories, revealing the hidden depth and meaning. Cutting through all the commercialism and superficiality that are increasingly typical of the great Christian events and themes, the Insights series brings the Bible vividly to life.

Product Description

'The simple language and warm humanity which infuses all Barclay's work is to be seen in abundance here. The distance between then and now, or between Jesus and me, is crossed in a split second and the parable becomes a parallel once again - set alongside my life.' -- Richard Littledale

Many of us know the different parable stories but what do they really mean, what was the context in which they were written. This book gives us a good insight and is a useful text for a daily quiet time

Barclay insight into the parables provides the reader with a better understanding of Jesus teachings and how they relate to our life today. He provides such depth and makes the Bible come alive to the reader; his books are a wonderful asset when studying the Bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good as a leader's source. 14 July 2013

As usual with Barclay's books, this is solid writing. It offers thoughtful interpretations with a touch of Barclay's scholarly background. I found it useful as a leader's source for a Bible study group, rather than as a study book for the whole class.

Almost exactly like, the parables of Jesus, by same author, only this book is like the shorter version. I like the other better.

I enjoy Barclay's writing very much as he sheds light on biblical passages--helping illuminate the historical context, the nuances of language, and the meanings of passages which may elude the contemporary reader. His New Daily Study Bible series is invaluable to gaining a solid knowledge of the New Testament.

This booklet is a very quick read which gives brief background for many--if not every--parable Jesus uses in the gospels. It is a good way to get a grounding in the meanings of the stories and a good way to begin a deeper study of these sayings. I would have preferred some more depth to some of the stories, but you find that elsewhere in Barclay or via other authors. This is a very good place from which to begin a study, though.

Dr H. V.Morton 1917 - 1964 was born to travel, and to write about his travels. In 1936, before he reached his 20th birthday he began a series of travel books. In The Footsteps of St Paul was his third travelogue and originally published in the 1930s Republished in 1964 by agreement with Morton's estate. Dr.Morton was a colorful character. He traveled from Jerusalem to Damascus and Antioch. He then followed the famed missionary teams as they crossed the mountains and deserts of Anatolia and Greece. Traveling by foot, boat, rail and camel Dr Morton he visited one after another of the Biblical sites in what I call "The Forgotten Holy Land" (c) His work inspired us to travel throughout the length and breadth of our new homeland for 2 and a half years. It will do the same for you (*** for the book * for the guts to make the trip.)
