4.0 out of 5 stars the future began in the 60s 19 Sep 2007
Format:Audio CD
there are some bands that have made music so far ahead of their time i often wonder if their groupies were fortune tellers, tarot readers or whoever can forsee things. bands like the velvet underground and can come to mind. with red krayola it appears mayo thompson stuck his head into the future to the 80s post-punk and beyond for a small moment and came back and tried to interpret it. because of this i can only really compare it to pere ubu, early sonic youth, wire, swell maps and the pop group. the first record 'the parable of arable land' consists of "songs" puntured by "free form freakout" which as you guess is complete, (but structured), noise, which i think easily beats velvet underground for any experimental racket. the second record is more a structured song layout, but still miles from the norm. maybe i haven't explored enough 60's music, but for a record/s to come out in 67/68 and sound 15-20yrs ahead of its time is rare especially as it sound as uncomprimising as post punk.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs... 3 Aug 2012

I have these great albums on record and thought it would be good to have both on one CD.
Both cool albums but these are recorded straight from vinyl and the sound quality is awful with loads of crackles and poor stereo effects.
Real shame as the packaging is really good, so pay the extra few quid and get the "hurricane fighter plane" compilation rather than waste your cash on this piece of plop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to the future 30 Aug 2010

The Red Crayola are probably THE most single influential and pioneering pyschedelic bands of the 1960's and probably of all-time. 'Parable Of Arable Land' (1967) ranks alongside Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica' as the most critically under-rated of recordings whose impact even after the 43 years since its initial release, has yet to be fully realized or understood.

The influence of the band's deconstructed sound and industrial dissonance stretches all the way to the expressionistic rock of 'Faust' through to the post-punk of 'Pop Group' and 'Pere Ubu' and beyond. The British band 'Spacemen 3' even named one of their albums after one of the band's songs in recognition of their influence.

Red Crayola played extremely wild and cacophonous pieces that whole-heartedly embraced feedback, avant-garde sound collages and static noise. Their sound, often free-form suites and 'performance art', was a deliberately self-conscious break from the traditional song format which the band though was a boring constraint on their musical aesthetic. Their 'freak outs' were closer to John Coltrane's free-jazz and to Jackson Pollock's abstract paintings than to rock and roll.

Mayo Thompson, the leader of the band, composed pieces that 'float', not in the ethereal sense, but in the way that melody and rhythm are allowed a relatively free reign. One critic described Thompson's compositional style as akin to "organism's that rely on supporting skeletons that are falling apart as they move."

Thompson placed his art firmly in the iconoclastic tradition that Frank Zappa had just founded, and simply increased the amount and the speed of noise. It was not a coincidence that Thompson was rediscovered by the new wave ten years later. 'Parable Of Arable Land' is one of the milestones of rock music.
