Red Krayola's two LPs from 1967 and 1968 are two of the weirdest albums from the psychedelic sixties .Released by Texas indie label International Artists they are now combined on one CD. Challenging, eclectic, influential.

there are some bands that have made music so far ahead of their time i often wonder if their groupies were fortune tellers, tarot readers or whoever can forsee things. bands like the velvet underground and can come to mind. with red krayola it appears mayo thompson stuck his head into the future to the 80s post-punk and beyond for a small moment and came back and tried to interpret it. because of this i can only really compare it to pere ubu, early sonic youth, wire, swell maps and the pop group. the first record 'the parable of arable land' consists of "songs" puntured by "free form freakout" which as you guess is complete, (but structured), noise, which i think easily beats velvet underground for any experimental racket. the second record is more a structured song layout, but still miles from the norm. maybe i haven't explored enough 60's music, but for a record/s to come out in 67/68 and sound 15-20yrs ahead of its time is rare especially as it sound as uncomprimising as post punk.

I have these great albums on record and thought it would be good to have both on one CD.
Both cool albums but these are recorded straight from vinyl and the sound quality is awful with loads of crackles and poor stereo effects.
Real shame as the packaging is really good, so pay the extra few quid and get the "hurricane fighter plane" compilation rather than waste your cash on this piece of plop.

I have no problems with the actual music on here, but the cd has obviously been copied directly from a scratchy vinyl source. The sound is harshly distorted ( maybe due to the vinyl it came from or intentionally ) and there are pops and clicks throughout. Apparently earlier versions sound better, but this does not sound remastered or from original tapes. There are also many artifacts from a poor vinyl source throughout. Shame the music sounds good beneath the surface.
Behold!!!!! Hurricane Fighter Planes cd, just below this in the listings for Red Krayola. Remastered in 24 bit ( it says) and containing both the cds on this release, but in wonderful clear sound.....and at half the price..bargain...go get before it disappears!!!!!!!!!

Great music, nice packaging, horrible sound quality 25 Feb. 2007
By Yosuke Kitazawa - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The music here is great. But unfortunately this label thought it would be fine to master the albums from horribly scratchy vinyl, probably played back on a portable turntable and recorded with a microphone set up across the room. All loud passages are distorted, and cracks, pops and scratches are heard throughout. I love vinyl and don't mind cracks and pops, but not on a commercially released CD.

These albums admittedly are not hi-fi recordings. But I can tell when something does not sound the way they should.

The Red Krayola release HURRICANE FIGHTER PLANE on Atom Records includes the same albums on 2 separate CDs, supposedly in much greater sound quality (and not sourced from vinyl). I will return this and buy that instead.

EDIT: The aforementioned HURRICANE FIGHTER PLANE is even worse than this release - the sound quality is a bit better (no vinyl crackles), but the track order is completely messed up, with each track fading out when they should lead in to one another, among many other problems.

Please see my review for that product:

Great music but dubbed off scratched vinyl 8 April 2011
By Michael - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I guess I was too quick to buy when I saw the words 'digitally remastered', but unfortunately what it meant was 'digitally remastered from vinyl'. I don't mind listening to copies of vinyls when it comes to extremely rare records and singles where the original tapes disappeared years ago. But from other CD releases I guess the master tapes for these albums do exist somewhere, so I'm not happy listening to scratched vinyl in this case. That's the second problem - surely there must be better condition copies of the original LPs to dub from? Contrary to what the other reviewer says, the scratches are disturbing especially in the quieter interludes. For some reason, a lot of record companies have messed up this release. The Hurricane Records version seems to be from master tape, but for some inexplicable reason they mangled the running order of the songs and left off 2 or 3 tracks. I now have 2 versions of the same albums I'm not happy with. I'd advise any prospective buyer to look elsewhere.

Subpar but with good qualities. 7 Sept. 2012
By Heidi Versaw - Published on Amazon.com

Ok I had bought the 1991 Red Krayola - The Parable Of Arable and the sound quality was great however the track cuts were not right. the first track hurricane fighter plane was actually two free form freakouts Hurricane and Transparent Radiation all on one track. So I have sought a reissue with the track splits that were right. I found this one and it suits that purpose.

Now The sound. Wow bad job. This was reissued, claimed to be re-mastered, and they must have transfered direct to the computer, or cd, right from the record and with bad equipment at that. Ok so I now at least know how to put the proper track cuts in the first one I bought. Unless someone comes out with a reissue that has great sound and proper track cuts.

Brilliant 12 May 2007

Brilliant imaginative psychedelia very much the invention of Mayo Thompson and others. I didn't expect the sound quality to be incredible so it is fine. I can hear the playing well.
