Product Description

Product Description

Spa pampering of hands, elbows, and feet comes right into the home with this paraffin bath. Paraffin-wax treatments soften and smooth the skin of hands, elbows, and feet, and the heat can soothe sore muscles and aching joints. Using the bath is no more complicated than melting 4 to 6 pounds of paraffin in the cool-touch tub. (Six pounds of pure, hypoallergenic paraffin accompany the bath.) The temperature control is then turned to "keep warm" and the wax allowed to cool before hands, elbows, and feet are dipped into the melted paraffin 6 to 10 times. For longer treatments, a plastic liner (60 are included) can be placed over the wax layers to retain heat. (For even longer heat treatments, HoMedics sells mitts and boots.) If others use the bath, used wax might be discarded. Otherwise, it can be returned to the tub.

I finally managed to obtain one of these recently after a long search. It was an item recommended to me by the hospital. They are frequently used by the bigger hospitals for rheumatology diseases such as Raynauds Disease or Scleroderma. It improves the circulation to the hands (and/or feet) and improves the skin condition too. It is a heat therapy treatment that can be done at anytime at home and as many times a day as you feel like it too. The heat helps also to combat joint and muscle pain and the heat itself enables the user to gain a little more mobility in their hands. The treatment is also good to help with elbow pain too. When you peel the wax off it was recommended to me to roll it around in my hand which again helps make the joints and muscles work immediately after receiving the treatment. Then you simply drop it back into the bowl and it will melt back to liquid.
It comes with 6 lbs of wax and 60 liners, which I have been reusing too since they can be used several times. These are wrap your hands or feet in once treated with the wax, to maintain the heat for a longer 10-20 minute treatment rather than the shorter treatments. The wax should last a very, very long time before it needs replacing. I was rather dubious about having to keep it permanently switched on for my type of use but the appliance is designed with that in mind, however you must have a safe and secure place to keep it when in use. It has a wide base so hopefully shouldn't get knocked over easily. It is a good size to fit your foot in to, many of the other brands don't seem as big.
My only problem is that I am unable to tell temperatures, and I know that I cannot treat my feet on anything but the lowest temperature setting and my hands on the next setting.

I'v have owned my Paraffin Wax Bath for over a year now. It is very good when treating dry hands and feet but I haven't needed to use it for arthritic conditions so I am unable to comment.

Once set up the wax takes at least 3-4 hours to melt but once melted can be kept on 'standby' for future use. This makes it ideal should you need to use it at short notice. It is temperature controlled and I found the recommended setting a little too hot but this can be easily adjusted. If the wax feels too hot then I suggest you try 'dipping' a second time as this will protect you from your first application. This wax bath is large enough to accommodate the largest of feet so it also good for men too.

I very highly recommend using heated hand and feet mitts as they help the moisturising properties of the wax to penetrate more deeply. If using on feet don't forget to remove/file hard skin first for maximum benefit.

Word of warning: Be VERY careful when moving the bath when the wax has melted - I managed to slop wax over the edge of the bath onto my carpet. An absolute nightware to remove!

Otherwise, I really highly rate this wax bath particularly over smaller/cheaper models available in other stores.

Just dip your hands and arms into the warm wax bath.
Really rejuvenates tired, sore muscles and joints, while softening and smoothing skin. It's like having a salon at home and great for arthritis sufferers.
Comes with it's own wax and you can use again and again.
Highly recommended.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! 25 Nov 2003

I bought the paraffin bath a few weeks ago, and I absolutely LOVE it! It has softened my skin and took away all of the dry, rough parts on my hands and feet. This is an A+ product! I am definitely going to buy some more as Christmas gifts for my family and friends! It takes away all the stress and gives me skin so soft, it feels like baby skin!

For a consumer unit this one is pretty darn good 16 May 2008
By S. J McCartin - Published on
I've owned two consumer units and I have been to a hand therapist several times and used commercial units. My first one was a dr. scholls, that one is nice because it only takes three hours to heat up and has a timer on it so you can set it to come on at three am so it's ready at 6 when you get up. That one also came with nice terry mitts but it's a shallower and a bit narrower unit, it's hard to get a wrist into the dr. scholl unit, this unit is better for wrists and probably ankles and feet too because it's wider and deeper. This one takes about 14 hours to melt the wax for the first time. Unlike the dr. scholl, you'll probably want to melt the wax and then leave it on all the time on low setting since it takes so darn long to melt; this one has several heat settings so it's not going full heat all the time (the Dr. School is high and low only, this has solid, warm, melt and two other settings in between). This unit is a little disconcerting because the heat light goes on and off, you think maybe the unit isn't working but I think it does this by design so it doesn't get too hot or overheat. The outside of this unit does not get anything except warm and the bottom has a cord control built in. On the inside it "appears" that the heating elements go all the way up to the max line (much deeper than the Dr. Scholls unit). Unlike other units this one comes with 6 pounds of paraffin compared to 4 for my other unit. Even with all 6 pounds in it there is room for a bit more and like I said a deeper unit is better for wrists so you may want to buy more paraffin right away so you'll have it when you need it (you lose a minute amount and do have to add more occasionally). Buy your paraffin off amazon it's way cheaper out here than I've ever been able to buy it in local stores. My hand therapist uses the 150.00 (therabath pro) unit they sell on amazon it's a bit deeper than this one but I didn't have that much to spend now. My hand therapist also uses a heating pad or hot pad (they heat them in hot water) to wrap around to add to the amount of heat because the paraffin cools pretty quickly even under the plastic bag and a towel or terry mitt. This unit does not come with mitts but they do give you 60 plastic bags. No reason to toss the bags every time I just reuse it every time till the bag tears. So far I like this unit better than my Dr. Scholls but they could have tossed in some terry mitts. I gave away the Dr. Scholls unit but I kept the mitts for this one. It's worth the money so far.

heaven for your feet 8 Mar 2007
By M. Penny - Published on
I will definitely say that this item is all you want from a paraffin bath. I looked at a number of them, and this is a very good size--I wear size 8 1/2 shoes and it fits me easily with plenty of room to spare. It heats up pretty quickly; I have 5 lbs of wax inside, and it took about 5 hours for it to melt the first time, and much less every other time. If you turn it all the way down, but do not unplug, I would say about an hour to melt completely down for dipping, if not less.

I would also suggest, rather than using the bags that come with them, just go ahead and use saran wrap to keep in the heat of the wax. That's even what they do use at my spa. Alternately, you can use the bags that come with them, and then put socks on over them to keep them on and the heat in. Enjoy!
