Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Defined by its butterfly-like ears, expressive and erect, the Papillon is renowned for its elegance and its superior intelligence, believed by experts to be the brightest of the toy breeds. A miniature spaniel by heritage, the Papillon is a friendly and obedient companion dog, always willing to please his master, with whom he bonds very closely. The Papillon has gained a devoted following beyond its native France, where it is known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, to become a beloved pet in the UK and a competitive show and obedience dog. This book provides the much-needed factual information about the Papillon and its ancestry, character and standard, as well as the proper selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and showing. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup’s arrival and preventing puppy problems. In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Papillon. Whether it’s basic training problems, allergies or fleas, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Papillon. Topics discussed include: History of the Papillon; Characteristics of the Papillon; The Papillon Breed Standard; Your Papillon puppy; Everyday care of your Papillon; Housebreaking and training your Papillon; Health care of your Papillon; Showing your Papillon; Your senior Papillon.

Dainty companion of kings and royalty; diminutive package of poise and personality; faithful, fun-loving and full of mischief: such is the charming Papillon who has long reigned as one of the most captivating toy dogs known to man. The tiny Papillon is perhaps best known for its lovely erect and delicately feathered ears, which is the characteristic from which the breed derives its name, papillon being the French word for butterfly. Butterfly may also be most appropriate because the word itself conjures up graceful and enchanting images. Such is the nature of this most winsome animal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good, some very bad, 28 Jun 2004
By Linn "Music Belle" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Papillon: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Hardcover)
This is quite a good book if you are completely new to the breed and plan to read other books as well... There are some factual mistakes (like when the author describes the Phalène-variation of the breed - completely wrong) but there are also some good general information. I wouldn't recommend it though. There are other books better to read (the Complete Papillon) for those interested in these wonderful toy dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Papillon (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series), 11 April 2007
By Faunette S. Willis - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Papillon: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Hardcover)
I have owned five senior "rescue Paps" in the past six years. Now I have a 15 month old puppy and a nine year old Pap who had been the alpha dog, but that was before we got our baby. This is like nothing I have experienced before or in many, many years...its like having a baby whose every action depends on me. To say she's a joy is to put it mildly, she's a nuisance, but I love it and having this book as my handy reference has been a life saver. I have had seniors in the past who just joined the household, but this tiny little Pap whose energy is almost overwhelming.. . and this book have helped when I wondered if I had done the right thing.

A complete and comprehensive look at Papillions. I learned so much. My Papillion and I are very close and will be great pals for a very long time because of the tips I learned from this book.
