This is a cracking first album from this quartet led by tenorist George Crowley.

The group are extremely well-integrated and are particularly effective in exploring the rhythmic possibilities of their compositions which are quirky, melodic and very well-considered. All but one of the tracks are by Crowley, the last "Bela Lugosi" is by pianist Kit Downes.
Crowley has a nice, light tone and a fleeting style recalling cool-school West Coast stylists of the fifties; his unison playing with Downes piano on a couple of tracks is evocative of this. His playing on "Still Life" and "Embracing Air" is exemplary, the beauty and sensitivity of his ballad approach is ably enhanced by Calum Gourlay`s subtle and supportive bass playing.

An enjoyable and highly recommended album of good, thoughtful music from a quartet I certainly hope to hear more of; the album runs to just over 46 mins. - check out the mp3 download page for samples.
