This book contains a lovely mix of paper pieced garden-themed 7" and 5" blocks that can be sewn either on the square or on the point like a diamond. (The 5" squares sewn as diamonds become 7" squares.) There are several floral patterns as well as 2 birds (a dove and a robin) and a squirrel. There's also a pine cone. Many of the designs are fairly involved requiring many little pieces of fabric. The authors suggest cutting each fabric piece to match the corresponding shape in the design, but I prefer to cut rectangles. Either way, preparation for the more elaborate designs is quite time consuming. But the results are well worth the effort.
Also included are applique patterns that are added on top of the quilt. There are different kinds of leaves and lily pad-type shapes. Put together, the results are stunning. If you look carefully at the cover of the book, you'll see diagonal "rows" of floral paper pieced blocks with applique lily pad shapes, stems/vines, and stepping stones.
The book contains many examples of how the various designs can be combined into smaller and larger projects with seasonal or holiday themes. There are even suggestions for quilting designs.
Overall I am very excited about this book and look forward to trying to mix and match my own garden themed quilt.
