3.0 out of 5 stars Good film 22 Aug 2012

One of those films you start watching late at night and just have to keep watching to the end, so great to find it on DVD. Good film but scary to see how easily someone can pretend to be a Doctor and how they cover for each other ! .. just hope it was not based on fact !

5.0 out of 5 stars Under rated film 9 May 2013

I love this film. It is so believeable and as such pretty worrying. Paul McGann is good and I wondered what happened to him after this?

This is a slick thriller closely based on the novel of the same name by John Collee ( who is also credited with the screenplay). The plot revolves around a hospital porter ( Paul McCann) who steals the identity of a dead junior hospital doctor and successfully applies for a job as a casualty officer where he finds himself hopelessly out of his depth. He is saved by the beautiful Amanda Donohoe who is working as a Staff nurse in the same department. However, he becomes over-confident and arrogance starts to creep in. Then the wife of one of his senior colleagues breaks her arm..... Tom Wilkinson plays the consultant in charge of the department well and the whole film builds to a thrilling ( will he be found out?) climax. I really enjoyed this having last seen it on release sometime in the early 90s. Whilst it has dated somewhat, as a junior doctor in that time period I found some of the scenes particularly resonant - including the infamous Biers block scene as well the initial scenes in the casualty department. Overall this is a very well written and competently directed film. The acting is good and McCann does a fine job as the arrogant but out of his depth bogus Medic. Donohoe also shines as the angelic but troubled Christine - who falls for McCann's dubious amoral charms. I would recommend for all - particularly anyone who worked in a casualty department from that era. I would have rated 5 stars if not for the disappointing extras on the DVD - only 2 disappointing short films and no relevant interviews or background to the film itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paper Mask DVD 3 Sep 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been looking for this movie on DVD for years as I used to have it on video back in the early nineties. So pleased to have found it on Amazon. It's a great movie. It's a fair transfer to DVD as the picture and sound quality is basic but absolutely fine for the subject matter. As for the movie itself - it requires a little suspension of disbelief and the acting and dialogue are not Shakespeare but is good fun nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourites 6 July 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Paper Mask is one of my favourite films of all time.
For years I have watched it on VHS recorded from the tv.
So after all this time it was a thrill to finally get the opportunity to own it on DVD.
Having read the other reviews I was worried that I might be disappointed.
I've just finished watching it and I must say I am at a loss to understand why other people were dissatisfied with it.
The only people who could possibly be unhappy with the picture quality are those who expect every film, regardless of when it was made, to be of Blue Ray standard.
For a regular DVD of a film made in 1990 it is more than acceptable.
Paul McGann plays Matthew Harris, a hospital porter who resents the qualified doctors and feels they are, in reality, little better than him.
When a doctor dies and Matthew stumbles upon his personal possessions, a plan forms in his mind to steal the doctor's identity.
The question is how far is he prepared to go in order to maintain the masquerade?
Paper Mask features excellent performances from both Paul McGann and Amanda Donohoe.
It also features cameos from both the late great Tam White who not only played Macgregor in Braveheart but also contributed the vocals on several episodes of Tutti Frutti and Ian Bairnson, who might not mean much to a lot of people but for fans of The Alan Parsons Project is arguably one of the best, (from a clinical, note perfect, undistorted perspective), guitarists around.
The fact that it is not a widescreen presentation does not bother me one iota. But there again I am one of those people who manipulates widescreen to fill the whole screen anyway because I hate having lines at the top and bottom of the screen.

Paul McGann is suitably creepy and dysfunctional as hospital porter and Biology drop-out Matthew Harris who inadvertently/improbably comes across the effects of a recently deceased doctor and uses them to steal the dead man's identity. Amanda Donohoe co-stars as a worthy but gullible nurse who aids him with his ploy to destroy all traces of his previous life and retain the new one permanently, while Tom Wilkinson pops up as the cynical Consultant who buries his suspicions about Harris in order to protect his own interests.
The film does feel somewhat dated even though it only twenty years old, but a raft of decent supporting actors and a reasonable script - only partially ruined by the ridiculous ending - keep this very British film ticking along nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who cares about the ratio? 22 Aug 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Aren't reviews supposed to be about the CONTENT OF THE FILM while technical issues remain a matter for seller reviews?

I'd ignore the 1 star reviewer chuntering on about 4x3 ratios and lack of sub-titles and buy this film regardless. I'm just grateful it's on DVD to replace my ancient VHS version before it's beyond repair.

Of course the film is dated, it was made nearly 20 years ago (and the sound and lighting wasn't brilliant even in the original), but don't be deterred - it's a great thriller, full of decent actors (of their time) and awash with twists and turns. I have no intention of spoiling the watch by giving away too much detail. It's a medical/psychological thriller, not at all beyond the realms of probability (more so, now), and it's a great film for any thriller collection.

Whether your viewing pleasure derives from assessing if the plot could ever happen in reality or if like me, you welcome the opportunity to sit down and enjoy an exciting thriller, I have no doubt in my mind that this film meets both criteria.

Buy and enjoy while the opportunity is being made available
