3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre 30 Mar 2010
By Alex VINE™ VOICE
Sadly this is becoming a trend with Marc Platt plays (a shame given he is responsible for two of my favourite stories).

This story sees the re-introduction of the Draconians, one of the more positively remembered races, if only because their costumes stood the test of time unlike so many other alien races from the Pertwee period. Unfortunately there isn't really much of a purpose to their re-introduction, the plot could be serviced equally well with any other race.

At the end of the day I had trouble paying attention to this story, indeed I listened to part 3 many times over as I simply found myself tuning out. It's placement in an otherwise exciting and well placed trilogy is questionable, it adds nothing to the arc which feels odd given how tense blue forgotten planet and patient zero are. It does serve as a demonstration that Colin and Mila travelled together, but honestly this is explained in Blue Forgotten planet.
You can listen to this play without the other two parts of the trilogy, but my recommendation would be to listen to them and skip this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paper Cuts - A Thrilling Paper Chase 31 May 2010
By Victor HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
A mysterious call summons Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor and companion Charlie Pollard to the Draconian Empire, of which the Doctor is a Nobleman - among many of his other awards. Following the death of the latest Deathless Emperor, there are dastardly plans afoot to seize the throne from the reforming rightful heir and return Draconia to the `old ways'.

The action takes place on the floating space tomb of the dead emperor, giving a suitably creepy setting for the various shenanigans. The Japanese style culture of the Draconians provides fertile ground for a complex and well thought through story. Baker once again excels as Six, full of energy and compassion. He inhabits the character perfectly. There isthe usual excellent job from Big Finish, with some great soundscapes, good script and decent directing.

This is a decent and thrilling four parter, with some excellent twists and cliffhangers. The scriptwriters have done well to make this a self contained story, but one that links to a previous third Doctor adventure, and also has some first Doctor continuity. There is also a bit of continuity from the preceding `Patient Zero', but knowledge of any of these adventures is not necessary to enjoyment of this one.

An excellent tale, and well worth a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuts both ways 9 Nov 2009
After the disappointment of Patient Zero this audio is a breath of fresh air. The reptilian Draconians appeared only once in the classic series - in Malcolm Hulke's 1973 story `Frontier in Space', but are well worth resurrecting for the noughties. Unlike in that story, we get to observe the Draconian culture and see its obsession with politics and ceremony this time around - the Draconian Emperor is dead, and his shiftless son is waiting to fill the void, whilst unbeknown to him his own mother is working behind the scenes to ensure continuity; unfortunately she appears to be completely unhinged!

Into these machinations come The Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) and his current travelling companion Charley Pollard - or is it..? And as the truth about Charley's true identity comes ever nearer to being revealed, the tension and excitement are ratcheted up to 11.

Bright, bustling, absorbing, and frantic - this story is both thoroughly entertaining and much more accessible to a newcomer to the series than its Big Finish predecessor. Colin Baker and India Fisher make a great team, and the supporting cast is uniformly excellent too. With a continuation of the ongoing bonus story `The Three Companions', and more insightful banter from the cast and crew of the audio story, this is a decent package - hopefully the next one will be worthy of its own predecessor...
