The art of paper cutting has a long history. Ancient cuttings, some dating from before 1000 B.C., have been excavated in China's Xinjiang province. Today, paper cutting is a popular handcraft worldwide, with a variety of applications.

Paper Cutouts features 45 designs of stunning motifs that can be used around the home or framed as elegant artworks. Each design includes a full-sized template to photocopy in advance. If you want a truly beautiful book about paper cutting, buy this book. I can't believe I am the first person to review it when this subject is so current and has become so hugely popular in the past couple of years. It is stunning and the 45 designs with templates are beautifully laid out and easy to copy and work from. Some of the larger templates are triple page fold-outs. The patterns are very clear and the step by step text on how to create the cut outs is excellent and includes the type of tools and paper you should use. The patterns are gorgeous and anyone new to paper cutting as well as people already practised in the craft would enjoy making them. You could also use the designs for printmaking templates. The crisp colour photographs also show finished designs displayed and used in various ways and in different room settings. I am thrilled with the book and it is incredibly good value for money. I would love it if the authors found the time to publish a sequel, it is one of the best books about art or crafts I have bought in a long time. If I lived in France I would be signing up to do a course with one of the authors Helene Leroux-Hugon who teaches graphic arts in Nantes, France. I will treasure this book.

The book is beautiful and contains plenty of simple to more complex stunning drawings to cut out.
The instructions are poor though, especially if, like me, you are new to this craft. If you are a newbie and are about to start one of many glorious projects I would advise to surf the web first to find some generic tips and tricks on paper cut-outs. The preparation is not that simple either, some of the templates span 2 pages in the book which means they cannot be traced easily on different paper.
Having said that, the materials needed are not many and are easy to buy, the projects can be used for windows, screens, pictures, lamps, walls, in a variety of rooms.

OPEN the book 22 April 2010

Well, yes, as a previous reviewer complained I did find 3 patterns with chickens; but what do you expect from a farmyard pattern? And with 42 patterns in the book I don't fault them for that, and I don't even care for chickens. What I did find was a great book with a variety of patterns large enough to get your scissors into.

And don't forget to unfold the large-format patterns. Some of them are that long. And guess what, galleylama? When I opened the pattern of Two Herons, on the inside of the fold was the Dragon pattern you so longed for. And unfolding the Persian Cypresses pattern revealed the matching dragon! I hope you didn't return the book before discovering those.

Hint to readers: When you are turning the pages and some of them feel a bit thicker than the rest, there's a reason for that. You are feeling the fold of a long pattern, and there is one on each side of the page. Now that's what I call getting your money's worth.

This book was even more than I hoped for.

Lovely designs 5 July 2009
By Amateur papercutter - Published on Amazon.com

I thought this book's designs for paper cutting were lovely. I prefer designs based on nature and found many delightful ones and what I consider to be good variety. The directions might be a bit skimpy for beginners, but readers with a little familiarity with the craft of paper cutting will be in good shape.
