4.0 out of 5 stars A bit basic but pretty stylish projects 29 Jun 2011
By Miss K TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is no doubt this is a very pretty book: it's modern, stylish and the kind of book I'd make a beeline for if I was on the hunt for a gift. On this occasion I actually purchased a copy for myself, hoping it would get me back into paper craft which I tend to dabble in from time to time. Sadly, my immediate thought (after 'oohing' and 'aahing' the prettiness of everything) was "this is just too easy." As a regular crafter, I really don't need instruction on how to wrap a book with paper or cut triangles and string them together to make bunting.

Having said this, the book DOES provide inspiration for designs that are clean, modern and quite elegant. Fair enough a lot of the projects involve cutting out shapes and gluing them together but I suppose the cool part when it comes to craft is seeing the finished result - and the finished results here are good. The projects in this books are quick and simple and there are templates provided for some projects (you have to download them from the chronicle books website).

I like the style of the finished results but overall didn't feel it added much to my existing knowledge/awareness of paper crafting. I am no seasoned expert and only dabble with paper crafts but still found everything all too easy. Given the right audience however, the book will be a valued addition: if you want to start working with paper crafts or are new to crafting in general. The book might also appeal to a younger teen audience who would appreciate the more grownup, sophisticated feel of this book as opposed to the kind of craft books often marketed at children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Projects, Great Inspiration 15 Oct 2010
By K. Kasabian - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This stylish, modern how-to book is an important addition to my expanding craft book library. Most of the paper projects are simple to make and quite beautiful, but the most exciting aspect of the 25 projects is that they are a catalyst for one's own imagination. There are so many papers available today that any given project will likely never yield the same results twice.

Each project contains a finished photo of the project, line art illustrations of the steps involved and some suggestions for adding creative details. The illustrations are fairly functional but far too small (small text and pictures are a common gripe I have with Chronicle Books titles in general). The accompanying written directions are simple and straightforward.

Some of the projects included in this book are: paper flag banners, giant paper flowers, pinwheels, wrapped candle holders, book covers, mustache drink toppers (very cute), paper silhouette portraits and a bird mobile. Some projects include templates that are available through the Chronicle Books website, so you'll need a printer. If you're an active crafter, you will probably have most of the supplies on hand already.

All in all, a great book for those who value having and giving things homemade. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, but ...... 31 Jan 2011

Bought the book due to the great graphics and ideas, however you must go on the web site to get the patterns. When I get a book I want the patterns in the book or a dvd included for the price and for convenience.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected 22 Feb 2011
By Azul - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I know that with the large information available at the internet is getting difficult to find a book with really original ideas but base on reviews and the pre-view of the inside the book that is exactly what I was expecting. I thought this book could provide with some out-of the box ideas for paper crafts and it didn't. Despite the fact that most of the projects are available on-line, they don't have the wow factor I was looking for, the ideas are very simple and if you are really paper crafty probably you came up with the same ideas by yourself. Oh and the best part the templates are not included the instructions are like: use a template for a flower and then do this, seriously? why the templates are not included you even have to look for them, I know is not difficult to find them but at least I would expected that the templates were included.
