The Mamas and Papas were formed after the break-up of a little-known short-lived group called the Mugwumps. Other members of that group formed the Lovin' spoonful. This compilation contains all the essential hits of the Mamas and Papas while they were together.
The classic Mamas and Papas songs are all here including California Dreaming, Go where you wanna go, Monday Monday, I saw her again, Words of love and Creeque alley. These are classic slices of sixties folk-rock, some of which at least you must be already familiar with.
Also in this collection are their great covers including Dedicated to the one I love (Shirelles) Do you wanna dance, which was originally an American hit for Bobby Freeman but later became a British hit for Cliff Richard and an American hit for the Beach Boys. Dream a little dream of me was over forty years old when the Mamas and Papas recorded it - this song was actually the first Mama Cass solo recording though the group was still united at this stage. Some of these covers were also hits for the Mamas and Papas.
You can also hear Mama Cass singing It's getting better, Make your own kind of music and other songs recorded after the break-up.
If you just want a single CD of Mamas and Papas music, this is a good one to choose. If you are thinking that a single CD may not be enough, I recommend the double CD, Singles plus.

The best of the Mamas and the Papa compilation album is one compliation album that truely lives up to its title. Not only is it a great mix of their best songs, but it is interesting to see how much these harmonies have influenced and shaped modern music as we know it. The four singers create some fantastic sing along harmonies in songs such as Monday Monday, and California dreaming, Also Mama Cass shows great depth of talent when she sings Dream a little dream. There is a song for every mood on this album. All well sung and produced in a natural way, which even includes false starts and noticeable errors every now and again. It makes for fantastic listening and I thoroughly recommend it

Oh, this one will take you back to those sunny summer days, sitting outside on the grass on campus, wearing a long granny dress and wire-rimmed spectacles (hey, those are back in style!) and sipping some wine while listening to the Mamas and the Papas on the transistor. Funny, though, this music is still appealing though nothing like it is being played today.
The smooth harmonizing of the group, highlighted by the clear, flexible and gorgeous voice of the late Mama Cass is surprisingly cheerful even today. The laid-back tone is great for weekend play, whilst cleaning the house or writing checks to pay bills. It makes me nostalgic--I guess I still love the same music I played in the 60's. Sigh.

Littlewoods had the foresite to put an ad carrying the Mama Cass song "Dream a Little Dream of Me" in the middle of the X factor.

It just detonated all the efforts of the contestants and put them in their place.

This album is a real bargain and carries all the tracks you would want from the M&Ps

Yeah the 60s are long long gone and 3 out of the 4 of the band are now no longer with us, but what great songs and such great vocal harmonies.

Buy it it's as cheap as chips

Its just one of those albums you just love to love. An impressive collection of all those hits we all know, and enjoy singing along to! The album highlights the strengths of this group collectively, but also singles out Cass Elliot's fantastic voice. As i am able to listen from beginning to end without skipping, i advise anyone to pick up a copy. You don't know what you're missing!

Bought this album as I like some of the Mamas & Papas hits from yesteryear. Although there are a few songs on it that I'm not so familiar with, most of their good songs are there - Dedicated to the one I love, California Dreamin', Monday Monday for example. A good CD to have in the car for a long drive.

These songs are as uplifting and fresh now as they were nearly 50 years ago so rest assured this is classic and will probably be around 50 years from now and almost certainly longer. For the price of a pint, jesus christ this is a bargain.

This indeed is probably the best selection of 'The Mamas And The Papas'. It was thoroughly enjoyable listening. Mamas Cass sings beautifully those lyrics 'Dream A Little Dream Of Me' and 'I Can Dream Can't I' and so can I. It's such a pity that she's lost to us and at such an early age too.
