4.0 out of 5 stars Panzerwaffe storms into France!, 13 Nov 2009
By Juha Vuorela (Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very good book, clearly better than the first one of the series. The previous Vol. 1 covering German tanks from World War 1 to the end of Polish Campaign in 1939 had too large scope for 96 pages. Vol. 2 deals only year 1940 and lion's share of the pages are devoted to French campaign. The battles and occupation of Denmark and Norway are covered only in two pages. The number of panzers in Scandinavia was of course much smaller than the number of them in the Benelux and France. But still I would have liked to get more in-detail discussion of the panzers in this theater of operations.

Generally, the text is really good. I had indeed an enjoyable time while reading this book. The photos are great and they are big-sized. Most of them are previously unpublished or at least I have not seen them before. The colour profiles of the armoured vehicles are nice-looking and informative. Fortunately they are not as dark as in the previous volume. On the other hand the book's few maps are really poor. They are original ones from a German publication of year 1940! Perhaps the author has tried to get some kind of retro feeling to the book.

After reading the book I understood how critical the situation in France was. Before the German invasion the French army was regarded as one of the best armies of the world. The attack was a big gamble for Wehrmacht and included many factors that could have gone totally wrong. It was indeed, if I may use poker terms, an all-in situation for the Germans. This time the Germans won. A year later Wehrmacht was again in a similar all-in situation when it invaded Soviet Union. I guess everyone remember what was the outcome of that gamble.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in early World War 2 German armoured vehicles and battle of France. Also modellers and war gamers will sure appreciate those many new photos and colour profiles of different kind of German military hardware.
