Product Description

Review

A sassy magazine editor searches for romance among flamboyant artists and social climbers in Sydney. Georgia Abbott has all but given up on love after walking in on her cheating fiance. Tired of sulking around London, Georgia decides a change of scenery will be just the thing to cure her broken heart. On a whim, she accepts an editorial job at Glow Magazine and heads down under. Alderson, an editor at British Elle, understands the magazine business and does a magnificent job of sweeping the reader up in the glamorous world of fashion. She also has a special gift for dialogue and makes each chapter more outrageous than the last as Georgia gets to know the recovering addict, the bulimic and the self-absorbed promiscuous princess who make up Glow's editorial staff. Though Georgia quickly adopts the staff's insouciant attitude and quirky style, her introduction to Sydney's men doesn't go quite as smoothly. Alderson gets right to the heart of the matter-the men that women are drawn to and the men that women actually need are often quite different. Georgia falls for a succession of wrong men: the pathological womanizer, the handsome dim-wit who's in love with another woman and the underachieving artist who is far too fond of marijuana. The author is adept at exposing the powerlessness women often feel in relationships. Until Georgia builds her self-confidence and properly heals from her breakup, she'll never meet Mr. Right. Here, copious amounts of champagne can be a great way to kick up your heals with friends, but the path to happiness is found in self-reflection and purposeful living. As her year in Sydney comes to an end, there's a surprise or two in store for Georgia, providing hope that there are still good men out there. A lively romp down under. Vibrant characters, a beguiling setting and a plot that engages from start to finish. (Kirkus Reviews)

Synopsis

A wonderfully witty, entertaining debut novel in the same vein as Kathy Lette, Helen Fielding and Marian Keyes. This is a light and clever women's romp set around lovable heroine Georgiana Abbot, a magazine editor from London who comes to Sydney to work as deputy editor of a girlie magazine, after her heart is broken.

Hot Hot Hot!! 2 Oct 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
After spending a couple of months travelling in Oz I was rushing around Sydney looking for a few keep sakes to take home when I remembered the long flight I had to endure to Los Angeles. I asked the girl in the bookshop to pick a witty, romantic, but not too soppy book for the plane journey. She couldn't recommend this book highly enough so I bought it without even reading what it was about, as she seemed to know the type of thing I was looking for. By the time I got off the plane at the other end I felt like hopping back on just to go and thank the girl in the bookshop. I haven't laughed so much at a book in ages. You really feel for the lead character who has had a hard break-up and has ran off to Sydney to start a fresh. The twists in the story are so funny that they keep you wanting to read more and more. Some of the men are just plain weird but the good ones more than make up for the weirdo's. The first page gives such a true reflection of how a lot of us look at these hunky Ozzie blokes who live on a 'ranch', but the lives of the characters are so extreme and bizarre. You feel like screaming at her wanting to let her know about the Perfect man who is right in front of her, but she just doesn't see him. This book not only took me right back to Sydney, but made me quiver with the thought of those hunky Ozzie men!! : )

This book is fantastic, much better than all the usual 20-something romance/dramas which are normally based in London. Having it based in Sydney is a new twist and makes you want to go there and experience it all yourself! A must read!

From the very first words in this book I was hooked. The main character of the book, Georgia Abbott is easy to relate to as she is everyone or everyones best friend. All the charaters along the way are bright and comical and Georgia quest to find the ideal man/husband among the bagage carrying, slightly unhinged men of Sydney is vey amusing. The book is awash with laughter, booze, laughter, sex and more laughter. A first class read.
