My 6 year old son is a great fan of the Dirty Bertie books. There are three stories in this volume: Pants!, Fame! and Poop! Each story is split into four chapters, making good size 'chunks' for a young child to read in one sitting. In Pants!, Bertie has a bet with his arch rival, Know-All Nick, to see who can get changed after swimming first. Fame! deals hilariously with auditions for the play "Oliver!", with Bertie aiming for the part of the Artful Dodger, but ending up with something of a lesser role. Pooh! deals with the tricky situation (not unheard of!) of birthday parties clashing, when everybody wants to go to someone else's party and not Bertie's... These books are great for boys especially, with lots of rude humour and situations that they are familiar with. Great for children moving on from first chapter books to something a little more challenging, but still short enough to manage easily and with great illustrations.

This was our first (and best so far) venture into the world of Dirty Bertie. Unlike Horrid Henry, who is, well... horrid, Dirty Bertie is not an unpleasant litle boy, just a bit grubby and accident prone. The best story is 'poo' and had my husband and 4 year old son giggling uncontrollably for ages. Good fun to read to a small child. highly recommended.

Having ploughed our way through Horrid Henry I was looking for something to read that was a little less - shall we say strident? - but would still have 5 year old boy appeal and these books definitely come into that category. With great illustrations and funny stories they have both of us laughing out loud and if you have to have a whole series of books based on small boy humour then these are some of the best you can get. Great for KS1 confident readers and on up from there as they have short chapters and the child feels they are reading something they enjoy.
