Product Description

"...one of the funniest books I have ever read..."
"...made me laugh so much people were beginning to stare..."
"...incredibly hard to put down..."

There comes a time in every man's life when he says to himself, "Holy Sh*t! I'm about to be eaten by a bear!"

Tony James Slater went to Ecuador, determined to become a man.
It never occurred to him that 'or die trying' might be an option...

The trouble with volunteering in a South American animal refuge is that everything wants a piece of you. And the trouble with being Tony, is that most of them got one.

Just how do you 'look after' something that's trying its damnedest to kill you and eat you?
And how do you find love when you a) don't speak the language, and b) are constantly covered in excrement and entrails?

If only he'd had some relevant experience. Other than owning a pet rabbit when he was nine. And if only he'd bought some travel insurance...

That Bear Ate My Pants is the hilarious tale of one man's quest to better himself. Whether losing a machete fight with a tree, picking dead tarantulas out of a tank of live ones or sewing the head back on to a partially decapitated crocodile, Tony's misadventures are ridiculous, unbelievable and always entertaining.

Long before Sky One got involved, there were already plenty of Idiots Abroad. This is the story of one of them...

About the Author

Tony James Slater is a very, very strange man. He believes himself to be indestructible, despite considerable evidence to the contrary. He is often to be found making strange faces whilst pretending to be attacked by inanimate objects. And sometimes - not always, but often enough to be of concern - his testicles hang out of the holes in his trousers. It is for this reason (amongst others) that he chooses to spend his life far from mainstream civilization, tackling ridiculous challenges and subjecting himself to constant danger. He gets hurt quite a lot.

"That Bear Ate My Pants" is a throroughly entertaining read - once I started it I found it almost impossible to put it down! There are comedy moments a-plenty, one or two extremely touching moments and lots of interesting stories that give the reader an excellent view into what it would be like to volunteer in an animal rescue sanctuary in South America....by the end of the book I found myself bemoaning the fact that I had never taken the opportunity to do anything like this and wondering whether or not I'm too old to try now (which I am).

Alongside the "memoiresque" account of experiences volunteering the book also give the reader an insight into South America itself, the people, the forests, the beaches.....and of course the amazing work done by animal protection agencies - who mostly seem to be volunteers.

Most of all I was captivated by the stories about the various animals that arrived at the sanctuary, their characters and behaviours as well as back stories were fascinating, and sometimes sad, but mostly they have happy endings as the staff at Santa Martha look after them with such devotion and some of them even get released back into the wild (one of my favourite chapters).

Definitely worth reading, maybe it will inspire you to go out and have a similarly life changing experience.....all I can say is I really want a wooden parrot...

5.0 out of 5 stars That bear took a chunk out of my hand 30 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Did not even know this book was available to download........... I remember Tony saying he would write a book one day about his experiences at Santa Martha Rescue Center. What i did not realize was that 8 years later, it would be for me like a personal memoir with all the funny and crazy times we shared together. What a laugh we did have together, and Tony has nailed it very accurately in this book. I can only recommend it, its funny, and all the events in this book were just another (normal) day at the rescue center.

5.0 out of 5 stars Armchair Adventure. 26 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I'd downloaded the free sample of this book and was so enthralled by Tony Slater's storytelling, that I immediately bought the book. And I'm delighted I did. I was drawn into his world by vivid descriptions of places, people and animals and I can see just how much he loved all the animals and being there. I found it to be one of those tales that I could not put down and read it from start to finish in one evening. I didn't want the book to end and I hope (quite selfishly) that Tony goes back to the rescue center and writes another book. I'd like to know what happens to Osita, Machita and all of the other animals.

The average woman (speaking only from my limited experience of course), goes out on a date expecting a man to be strong yet vulnerable, tough yet sensitive, honest without being painfully honest, nice but a bit mean with it, funny yet able to hold serious conversation, not too desperate and clingy, yet to immediately agree to marriage and children as soon as she decides she’s ready, and – best of all – to know exactly what she wants, without ever having to be told. "e;
