Praise for John Gimlette:
"An exceptional piece of travel writing."-Books of the Year, "Sunday Telegraph"
"Terrific stuff . . . As a descriptive writer, as master of the telling observation and the well-chosen epithet, Gimlette is in the highest class."-"Daily Telegraph"

Hugh Thomson, Independent

`Gimlette has a gift for travel writing with details of the most intimate kind... A subtle book, with telling testimony from the survivors of what it was actually like to fight a war with few rules'

I have never felt compelled to write a book review on Amazon until now - Panther Soup is, however, quite simply one of the most incredible books I have ever read.

Having just finished the last page, I feel I have been on an extraordinary journey, accompanying the author and World War Two veteran hero, Putnam Flint, through time and three countries in the final stages of the Second World War in a quite unrecognisable Europe. As a travel and history book it excels, but the uniqueness of the book for me is the human interest that is so eloquently and often humorously described, making me laugh and cry but above all despair at both the civilian and military suffering.

All historians, however well read, will learn from this book. Ditto the most ardent traveller. Above all however, anyone with a passing interest in their fellow man can only be fascinated by the events of 1945 which are so beautifully described by the author.

I strongly recommend you buy it - prepare to learn (lots), laugh and be very moved should you choose to do so.

Starting with the glaring negatives: its a rotten title and the cover doesnt do the book justice.

This is not a 'band of brother's' type war story - but a travelogue that takes the reader from the USA landings near Marseille (operation dragoon?) via the Tyrol mountains to the Baader Meinhof gang. 'A European journey through war and peace' as it says on the cover.

The text is enriching, wonderful and evocative. Take the following extract from the authors climb into a mountain valley: "there was no sound any more, no creak or caw, or a friendly snap of grass. Even the river had gone quiet and was nothing but a small, dark hollow of emerald ice"

great book.

A great travel read 14 Mar 2008

Format:Hardcover
Panther Soup is an excellent book that is part travel book and part history. It is tightly written and packed with amusing observations. The author travels through Europe seeing it through the eyes of Putnam Flint, who took the same route during the war, which brings both the travel and history to life. It is full of detailed and witty observations, colourful larger than life characters and is a great story. Buy it!
