Book Description

28 July 2006 1844542718 978-1844542710 New edition
Every week there's another food or health scare. Whether it's British beef, the MMR vaccine or just sunshine itself, there's always somebody to tell you that you are under threat from yet another everyday activity; or that the food we eat, and the medicines we take are poisoning our bodies. However, this book reveals that we are all living longer, healthier lives, while science has advanced to the stage where medicines and surgical procedures are safer and more effective than ever before. So where does the truth lie? Who can we believe? How do we know whose advice is worth listening to? Examining the truth behind the headlines, drawing together the country's leading experts in their field to examine these questions, this book really does give you the excuse to "Diet Another Day". You may be surprised to find that many 'scientific' truths that have come to be circulated as fact would be better compared to urban myths and don't have the backing in the scientific community that is often claimed for them...

5.0 out of 5 stars How could I have been so fooled? 27 May 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a great read and exposes all the lies we have had drummed into our heads for the past 40 years. I love reading the chapter that debunks the saturated fat myth and always use it when discussing nutrition with friends and relatives.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly cited waste of time. 3 Nov 2011
By AndyB
Format:Paperback
I've tried to read this book twice now, and bar the only chapter which seemed to have any evidence, or indeed anything remotely interesting to say (Dr. Malcolm Kendrick's views on cholesterol) the rest of the book conflicts with 'psuedoscience' and strict interpretation of epidemiology; then uses the very same to make its point.

After around 100 pages of reading, as another buyer has suggested, 'thinly veiled right-wing rants', and several instances of "we're medical doctors... so trust us, WE alone know what is good for you," I gave up, on both occasions.

I certainly wouldn't purchase any more titles by the authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be compulsory reading 23 July 2009
Format:Paperback
An interesting book with contributions from people who are experts in their own fields. Just goes to show how we are sadly (and badly) served by the mainstream media in this country.
