Product Description

CD POLYDOR, 865400, 12 Track

Though many have tried, few albums have plundered the annals of rock quite as expertly as The Hiss's Panic Movement. The Atlanta Georgia quartet enlisted Oasis producer Owen Morris to pull off their debut album's amazing feat of looting. Consequently, as well as "borrowing" like the Gallaghers, The Hiss's sound a lot like them; cranking up the walls of guitars, flailing drums and singer Adrian Barrera's best wide-mouthed sneer as they barrel through their extensive list of influences. The Stooges' punk swagger powers "Clever Kicks" and "Back on the Radio"; the circular riffs and screams of "crazy lady" in "Riverbed" are pure Led Zeppelin; and "Brass Tacks" lifts the chords from the Rolling Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash" so closely that Keith Richards almost deserves a cut of the royalties. Elsewhere lurk the ghosts of Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Aerosmith, along with classic Americana in lyrics about snakeskin boots, cruel judges and guitar playing outlaws. All of which would make for a painful pastiche were it not for the absolute conviction with which The Hiss deliver it, having meticulously lined up the rock & roll clichés and pounded them home to the point where they're more revelation than rehash. A riotous barroom trawl, if Oasis had been into American road movies instead of the Beatles, this is what they would have sounded like. --Dan Gennoe

4.0 out of 5 stars Southern fried rawwwkkk!!! 14 Aug 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Southern blues.....raucous Noughties rock-outs and a spooky voodoo sea shanty..The Hiss offer far more than some of the reviews they have got in the indie press.
Whilst never quite reaching the "cool" quotient that indie-rock demands(and the sleeve looks like it was designed with another band in mind!), this is a solid and diverse debut album.
The tempo is fast and furious with very little time for any radio-friendly slush....main influences seem to be Oasis, late sixties Stones and a little bit of americana.
Forget the reviews(unless its the NME one) and buy this for a good late summer rock frenzy!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Hiss let us 'ave it! 21 Aug 2003
Format:Audio CD
From the outset 'Panic Movement' takes rock'n'roll down a darker but electrifying new direction. You can feel the intensity and sheer blood, sweat and tears attitude that cost original bassist Mahjula Bah-Kamara her sanity. The comparisons with Oasis were inevitable (the album is produced by Oasis'Owen Morris) but The Hiss have hurtled off on their own track. Adrian Barrera's vocals battle with melodic guitars, and 'Triumph' and 'Back on the Radio' are two thrilling tracks full of menace. Throughout The Hiss take a variety of influences from early Rolling Stones to the Stone Roses creating an edgy and arty sound which promises to become one that is all their own. 'Panic Movement' is one of the true rock'n'roll releases of the summer, don't miss the The Hiss because this is only the beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hiss are the future 10 Feb 2004
By Mikael Andersson - Published on
Format:Audio CD
This is the way new garage/indie rock sounds like. Or should sound like. The Hiss is a wonderful mix of The Von Bondies, Vue, Led Zeppelin and a tiny bit britpop. Sometimes raw and hard and sometimes soft and easy, but still rock and roll.
Best song is the epic adventure Ghost's Gold (6:27) but there's not a single bad song on this album. A great buy for every fan och real music.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rock in their blood 18 Aug 2003

My pick for the one band capable of restoring credibility to this otherwise beige world of radio blandness. Having waited for a true torch-bearer of the classic Manchester scene, what a suprise to find the answer come from Atlanta - GA.
This CD is brilliant, and it gets even better live. Thumbs up from the FreshTracks Crew in Chicago!
