Panic On was the album where Madder Rose were signed to a major label, as many bands at that time & was a bit more focused/commercial than its charming predecessor. It's a lot tighter, both song & sound-wise.
Main songwriter Billy Cote contributes most of the songs, plenty of classics such as the title track, Sleep Forever & Almost Lost My Mind are evident. Even better is the haunting Car Song, which sounds like Buffalo Tom playing a Madder Rose song, while Drop a Bomb is in Sonic Youth/Pale Saints/Ride feedback-pop territory. The band sum up the pressures of fame being forced on them (leading to the departure of handsome bassist Matt Verta-Ray)with Ultra Anxiety (Teenage Style)- which would feature in classic TV programme My So Called Life (along with Drop a Bomb).
The latter half of the album is more melodic, centred more towards songwriting- think stuff like Belly & Heidi Berry. Singer Mary Lorson offers some great songs, showing that she is moving out of Cote's shadow- towards her own excellent releases by Saint Low. Happy New Year, Margaret & Black Eye Town are all great songs- though Cote's When You Smile is probably the highlight of this latter half.
Panic On is one of the great guitar-albums of the early 90s, up there with Dirty, Going Blank Again, Frosting on the Beater , Seamonsters, Come on Feel the Lemonheads & Fuzzy. A great album that more than deserves listeners almost a decade on from its release.
