TERRIFYINGLY GOOD!!!! 2 July 2001
Format:Paperback
I am one of those chess book adicts. I buy a book, read the 1st 2 chapters and then see another exciting book. This book is different. The way it is structured makes it easy for you to have a few lessons a day without getting bored. It steers clear from analytic and complicated positions that make you tired. Instead it has a nucleus of 200 positions that are the key concepts YOU NEED TO KNOW. I repect "The reader from England" point of view, but I think he misses the point. You take these lessons into the game with you, to use in complicated positions. You recognize the patterns... not the complicated positions of individual games. The book has been so good for my play it is terrifying..well to oponents it has been. I only hope Bruce's other books are set out the same way. Its DYNAMITE IN A BOOK..WELL DONE BRUCE!

Let's take a quick look at what it says on the back cover of this book shall we? - "[This book] allows any student with a basic knowledge of chess to enjoy endgame study - while also vastly improving every aspect of his or her chess play." That's quite a grand claim and is unfortunately just the normal marketing hype. What does this book deliver? 239 endgames with a list of moves and a brief explanation. That's fine for what it is but it isn't particularly interesting to read and most of the endgames are pretty rare occurences and thus not particularly helpful. Also the sheer number of them makes them very difficult to remember. Many of the endgames shown have very few pieces in them - it would have been nice to have some slightly more complicated positions from actual games included with an explanation of the moves showing how they relate to the basics given in the lessons. Still, this book might be worth looking at if you really don't know anything about basic pawn endings - there are some helpful lessons illustrating important concepts such as opposition and critical squares.

This book helped elevate my game massively. I was often losing won positions in the endgame without knowing why. I was pleased to see each theme tackled clearly and simply with good explanations. Yes it does explain opposition and critical squares, as well as countless other essential endgame ideas. Thank heavens for that!!! I read it avidly from cover to cover, unlike other endgame books I've got that just bogged me down with unexplained reams of moves. If you already know the essentials of chess endgames, then this may not be the book for you, but if not, I'd strongly recommend it! What I didn't do though is tell my housemate I'd read it, he couldn't understand why he suddenly started losing! sorry mate ;-)
