Format: Audio CD
This is yet another great reissue in Harmonia Mundi's Gold series. Pandolfi is scarcely a household name and indeed very little is known about him (Andrew Manze in his typically informative and witty notes says that we might be forgiven for thinking that he had been made up by a bored musicologist on a wet Thursday afternoon), but these sonatas dating from 1660 are music of the highest quality. They are delightful and often intense works which are really enjoyable and which also reward careful listening. I was captivated by them when I first got the original disc and continue to enjoy them immensely.

The reason I invested in the disc in the first place was that it was played by Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr. They are now firmly established as great musicians in their own right, and together as one of the world's finest violin and keyboard duos who excel in this repertoire. This disc is one of their best, in my view. The fantastic empathy they have between them produces something really special, and all the thoughtfulness, virtuosity and verve one would expect from them is there in abundance.

Now it is reissued at budget price this disc is an absolute must for fans of Manze and Egarr, and also for anyone with any interest in Baroque music. Recommended very warmly indeed.

I first heard this remarkable music while browsing in a record shop a few years ago,
and asked the assistant who it was. I bought a copy, thereby allowing myself to be astounded as much and as often as I liked.
Manze and Egarr are now past masters at this kind of thing, but were less well known back in 1999 when this amazing disc was first recorded. It is now available in this HM Gold reissue from Harmonia Mundi, with its superb illustrated booklet, and copious notes - copious particularly condidering so little is known of Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli (fl. 1660-69) who was born `between 1620 and 1634 in the region of Umbria`. He was evidently - especially on the basis of these literally marvellous pieces - a violin virtuoso.
The opening two segments of the Opus 3 sonata - La Stella and La Cesta - alone are worth the price of this disc, sounding as they do unlike anything I`ve heard before, with an almost Spanish or Latin American feel to them, as if one is being invited to perform an ardent yet ornate 17th century tango.
The level of invention keeps one listening avidly, open-mouthed at times, certainly open-eared. The music settles down for minutes at a time - as in La Melana, for example - only to amaze the listener with some unpredictable flight of sheer perverse fancy.
It is all virtually unclassifiable, at least within what is generally referred to as `classical music`. Pandolfi seems to have had the urgency and inventiveness of J.S. Bach coupled with the restless audacity of a Liszt or a Scriabin!
A stunning disc of astounding music.

This is a cd of beautiful music performed brilliantly, as always, by Andrew Manze on violin and Richard Egarr on harpsichord.

Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi Mealli, who flourished from around 1660 to 1669, was probably born around 1630, and died in 1669 or 1670. Little is known about him, although he may have been involved in a murder and ensuing scandal, after which he fled to Spain. Of his works, only the Opus 3 and Opus 4 works remain, and it is these that are presented on this cd. These are virtuosi violin sonatas, and the performers on this cd are the ideal people to present these works.

According to Andrew Manze, "Pandolfi is like a grandmaster of chess who chooses a conventional opening and then varies it ingeniously". It's a pity that no more of his works appear to survive (although there's always hope they may turn up, I suppose), as his work appears to be important enough for Pandolfi to be considered a composer of importance sufficient to have been noticed by Purcell, and possibly even Schmelzer. And from Schmelzer, it's a short hop to the likes of Biber.

So, important works by an important composer about whom we know so very little. A pity, but then we are lucky to have these works presented to us in such a beautiful format with such great performers. Although these are works scored for just the violin and the harpsichord, don't for one minute think they are lightweight or tinkly pieces of no depth. They are highly musical, highly melodic and have a depth of character and tone that belies their slight instrumentation. At 80 minutes, you can't go wrong with this cd. Highly recommended.

Italian Baroque Violinist Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi 17 May 2015
By Papetti - Published on
Format: Audio CD
A very good CD, recording the only two Opus Violin Sonatas written by Italian Baroque Violinist, Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi in the "Stylus Fantasticus"; he may have been "unknown" to many, but his music is soft, beautiful and transcendent; and what's better, Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr team up again to render a fantastic performance on these Sonatas.
Thank you Harmonia Mundi for bringing us so much joy one more time.

Centuries before Stravinsky. It made me smile to think of it. I guess there really isn't new under the sun.
