Killing Joke, heard that name lately? It's a band that is destined to grow to status of legend in the the music hall of fame. Its started to do so already with the stunning self titled "second coming" album of 2003 returning Jaz and crew back into the tabliods.
An angry sound track for our time made by a friendly bunch pre gig (that dont suffer fools gladly though), and a one fingered gesture and thorn in the side of every corporate capitalist.
If you want to hear dark, heavy rock guitar, fused with hypnotic electronics and pumping drums then look no further. This is an album that will have surely influenced the likes of Nine Inch Nails and a spawn of other industrial and nu-metal acts.
From the moment the eastern sounding horns open this album with Pandemonium and the powerful guitar kicks in you are on a journey back through the aeons.
Man, you could be sitting at the Great Pyramid (where some of it was recorded in the Kings Chamber), close your eyes, see what i mean?
Exorcism, the second track, see's Jaz at his pyschotic best. "Behind the illusion of reality are forces that speak to me, we shall draw them out, we will cast them out!" Its seven minutes of pure aggression to purge your soul. Play it loud!
The voice counts down and we're into Millenium. Heavy and brooding, the drums pound, as the guitar takes us into the strangely uplifting chorus. Jaz is standing on the edge and ready to leap off. Listen, hear the vocal passion, you'll understand.
The eastern flavour continues with Communion, a track in which you can feel the past ages ebb and flow. Jaz and the band are clearly taking us further, the reasons not always clear but always compelling.
This leads us nicely into Black Moon, a beautiful dark track. You can feel Jaz's paranoia as he graples with the inner soul. The basic human instincts which he seems to both loathe and accept.
Labyrinth, what can i say? "You'll get it all back in the next life" spat out with cynical venom. Global capitalism and God take a bashing with this one. Cool.
The next track Jana, lifts us out of the album for a moment. It is a poignient track that although doesnt sit well with the rest of the album makes you think. Read the lyrics and contemplate.
Whats that noise? Jangling keyboard intro, crashing drums, chainsaw guitar... Jaz is off on one again. And boy, what a track. In the vien of Excorsism, he cough's and spits through a song that you must play loud! Rattle your neighbours plates with this one. Enjoy.
The dark, sweaty, and nightmarish "Pleasures of the Flesh" follows. The animal instinct must be given into... Jaz leads the listner by the hand into a world of flames and passion, probably with some dusky ancient eastern beauty! Give in to it.
The closing track is "Mathematics Of Chaos", a pumping heavy track. The world is in turmoil, war, global warming, its all here. For years i wondered what the numbers meant that are read out at the end of this track. Are they co-ordinates to some secret place, or some orbital mapping? Well, close, apparently its a sample from Star Trek. Sometimes its better to wonder.
This album is a belter. Buy it and play it loud!
