Book Description

1 Dec 2011
The giant panda is unique - and not just uniquely charming: it has no close relatives in the animal world. The iconic, instantly recognisable creature has symbolised wildlife conservation since it was adopted as a mascot. Yet despite having avoided extinction, a fate to which the species came perilously close, the population today is estimated at no more than 2000. This spectacular volume brings together the expertise of leading conservationists with an extraordinary collection of photographs from both the world-renowned Wolong research centre and the wilderness of Sichuan's magnificent Qionglai mountain range, the panda's natural habitat. Discover the world of this most lovable bear in this beautiful and authoritative celebration.

Review

Exquisite. A suitably stunning tribute to this incredible and much-misunderstood bear. (Henry Nicholls, author of The Way of the Panda) --Henry Nicholls, author of The Way of the Panda

The one-note diet, monochrome markings and long association with fertility treatments in captivity lend the giant panda an unreal air. But these animals are resilient: against all the odds, they total an estimated 2,000 individuals. This tribute to the beauty of the beast is informed by leading conservationists, but centres on stunning shots by photographer Zhou Mengqi. Backed by advice from panda experts Zhang Zhihe, Zhang Hemin and Hu Jinchu, Mengqi tracked his elusive subjects through the mountains of Sichuan for years. --Nature Magazine, 1 Dec 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars pandas 14 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book was first written in Chinese with the title "Chinese Giant Panda"but is now issued in the UK by The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to promote cthe arrival of 2 pandas at Edinburgh zoo.
There is everything you will ever want to know about pandas in this book. There are 3 sections a)history b)life style and c)conservation and the future.
The pictures are first class but it is a pity some are spread over one and a half or two pages.
There is a good map plus notes on resources, organisations and further reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book 5 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I Bought this book for my Panda addicted aunt, The Book is absolutely filled with gorgeous photos I will probably get myself my own copy as a wildlife lover and keen amateur photographer.
The book is great to uplift moods in this rather depressing climate and highly recommmended for those that love stunning images plenty of awww's and ahhh's .
Not actually read it myself just leafed through the pages and gushed at the images.

Lovely book. Full of awesome pictures and interesting information on the Panda. I love Edinburgh Zoo and go annually at least. Therefore knowing some proceeds go to their society makes the purchase that bit sweeter.
