This is one of those curious little books you sometimes come across, where every page tells you about two or three things you never knew or even thought about before. Every library should have one. I bet the guys who do the research for QI have well-thumbed copies of this book in their desk drawers, it's that kind of a book. Do you know who first came up with eyeglasses, and when? Or what people used before toilet paper came along in 1857? Who exactly ate humble pie? Answers to all these and more, etc, etc...
