NeoPDP - Continuing to Redefine Plasma Technology

Panasonic's VIERA NeoPDP is a breakthrough in plasma technology, featuring a range of innovations that bring every detail of life. The power behind NeoPDP is larger cell surfaces and improved phosphor mixtures of the display panel which ensure bright, true-to-life colours. What’s more, the cell’s pilot light has been minimised to achieve deeper blacks and higher contrast, while new & refined image processors bring out the very best of this ground breaking panel technology.

VIERA incorporates an improved panel production process and the new Real Black Drive system. A pre-discharge control system, the Real Black Drive system achieves next-generation black reproduction. When you're watching movies, VIERA renders images just the way the director intended, even in scenes where it's difficult to achieve a proper balance of light and dark.

Infinite Black

VIERA NeoPDP achieves an outstanding dynamic contrast ratio of over 5,000,000:1 to deliver the deepest black ever. This is especially important to accurately reproduce even subtle differences in the blackness level. Blacks are purer & whites brighter – giving sharper, more lifelike and 3-dimensional pictures.

600Hz Sub-field Drive with Intelligent Frame Creation Pro

To ensure smooth and judder-free pictures, VIERA NeoPDP employs innovative 600Hz Sub-field Drive with Intelligent Frame Creation Pro. This is a Panasonic's unique image-analysis processor that converts the motion in each scene into sub-fields. The sub-fields are then optimised to display fast action scene in Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution with amazingly smooth motion. Each frame is displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous processor - virtually eliminating unsightly smearing & after effects.

THX Certified Display

THX reproduces film images exactly as the film's creators intended them. The overall aim was to improve the experience of cinema-goers and faithfully recreate the audio and visual ambience that filmmakers intended. To receive THX certification, Panasonic's TVs undergo stringent tests to determine whether the exact same brightness and colour are displayed at all screen locations, and whether black levels satisfy standard criteria. VIERA meets the high standards set by the THX Certified Display Program.

View Photos from your SD Card

It's easy to view full-HD images with the SD card slot. Watch and show your photos and motion images right after you take them. Simply insert an SD Memory Card into VIERA to display photos and full-HD videos on the large screen. An easy-to-see, easy-to-use thumbnail display has also been added. You can also enjoy special background music, slideshow frames and transition effects.

Game Mode

In Game Mode, quicker image response increases the enjoyment of video games when a game console is connected to the TV. What's more, VIERA produces the dark images in video games more clearly. This mode works with the anti-image retention (wobbling) function, too.

VIERA Eco Link

VIERA Link uses the control signals that are transmitted through an HDMI cable for automated functions. Just press the VIERA Link button on the VIERA TV remote to control your entire Panasonic components including Home Cinema Systems, HD camcorder and Lumix digital cameras.
In 2009 the VIERA Link concept has been further developed, providing you even more functions. For example, Eco Link which helps you to save energy by putting all connected Panasonic devices into sleep mode when they are not used.

With VIERA Eco Link, you can connect and control all your Panasonic devices efficiently through your TV, without wasting power

Saving Energy with Eco Mode

As people become more aware about environmental concerns, the power consumption of their electronic products presents itself. To improve on the environmental impact of power consumption, Panasonic has introduced an Eco Mode as standard in most of its VIERA TVs. By activating the Eco Mode, a photo sensor measures the ambient light conditions of the room and the picture settings adjust automatically. As a result, the TV uses less power in darkly-lit conditions without any compromise of the picture quality.

Build to Resist – VIERA Tough Panel

Panasonic VIERA Plasma TVs are protected by a front sheet of glass resistant to impacts of up to four joules. This is particularly reassuring for families with small children who may otherwise inadvertently damage the screen when playing.
Also, the growing success of games consoles using motion controllers has led to an increase in TVs being accidentally struck and damaged by controllers which have slipped out of player’s hands. Thanks to VIERA plasma TVs’ Tough Panel you don’t need to worry. And what’s more, the protective panel makes cleaning easier too, simply wipe with a soft cloth when necessary.

Lower Power Consumption

With the NeoPDP panel, Panasonic has radically lowered the energy consumption of their TVs. NeoPDP televisions only need half as much energy as 2007 models to produce the same amount of brightness, doubling their efficiency. This has been made possible by expert engineers who have employed an improved luminous gas, larger cells and newly created electronic packaging. The result is an improvement in picture quality and eco-friendliness in equal measure.

Long-Life Design - up to 100,000 Hours of Viewing Enjoyment

Because a TV should have as little negative impact on the environment as possible, it must function for many years. That is why Panasonic Plasma TVs have been engineered to deliver an excellent viewing experience for up to an amazingly long 100,000 hours. So if you were to watch TV eight hours a day – that would be 30 years!

Panasonic lead-free Plasma TVs

Flat screen TVs that employ conventional technologies may contain a spot of harmful chemicals such as lead or mercury. These chemicals are then set free when the TV is taken to recycling at the end of its lifecycle. Already in 2006 and as the first manufacturer worldwide, Panasonic has completely eliminated the use of lead and mercury in their flat screen TVs.

    Packed solid . . . 22 April 2010
    By Key
I've had this TV for a week now and I'm not disappointed too much at all. It's very sleek, pretty slim (around 30mm) and definitely looks the part. As always with Panasonics, well built too.

Both Freesat and Freeview have a quality picture. I'm watching Liverpool v Ath. Madrid at the minute but, if I had to choose, I'd say Freesat has the better, crisper picture compared to the Freeview alternative. Freesat HD is a bonus and you can definitely tell the difference but having only 2 Freesat HD channels is a little on the sparse side - BBC HD and ITV HD, these, however, don't operate 24 hours a day. The TV also offers Freeview HD but being in the Tyne Tees area, I won't be able to receive any of these HD channels until 2012. Future proofed without a doubt though.

If youre not already aware, Freesat is missing some of the freeview channels you might be used to - Virgin, Dave, Sky News, Sky Sports News are all missing from the EPG. But you do get CBS channels on Freesat if you like that sort of thing. You can, however, easily pick up a few hundred extra channels using the 'Other Sat' option on the telly, but these tend to be shopping, roulette or adult phonelines for bored singletons. Nothing useful there I think. Luxe HD is also hidden away in the 'Other Sat' option which you can swap between quite easily - and Sky News is there too. There are a few half decent music channels too, Flava, Bliss and Scuzz (I think these could be the Sky owned music channels?).

I hooked up my PS3 and the picture was perfect. Game mode apparently gives a better response time but I cannot say that I noticed the difference - the clear, crisp picture is nothing that I've experienced before.

This TV is also capable of recording the channel you're watching - pause live tv and all that. Be careful though, you'll need to format the hard drive or USB stick you decide to use so that the telly recognises it. I haven't used this option yet - only because i dont want to wipe the family album from the only hard drive I own. Nevermind, its there if I need it.

Another option which is there is the telly's internet capabilities - you'll need a dongle though to access this, otherwise it's a eternet cable.

When I unboxed the telly, having not owned a Plasma telly to date, I was a little disappointed with the glossy screen, but this is nothing to worry about - no reflections at all once you turn the thing on.

There is a negative though, hence the 4-star rating, the telly tends to buzz during particularly very light scenes. Although not entirely noticeable, if you pick up on it, it tends not to go away. You can reduce it if you alter the picture settings, and this may be a plasma telly quirk, but if I'm paying this amount for a telly, I wouldn't want to worry about something like this.

Overall, a top telly which I'm very pleased with. Great black levels, a great selection of options you can taylor the picture to that you are viewing, and a huge amount of inputs you can shake a stick at - including USB and HDMI. HD options are definitely a bonus which should future proof your viewing for years to come. All that is missing is a recorder.

PS : the black glossy surround on the telly is the business, I'd avoid the silver surround unless you like the throw back to the 90s look.

Spent ages researching, wandering round showrooms, deliberating over LCD/LED/Plasma & also 46 or 50 inch. LED picture quality looked good, but somehow they just looked a little too thin & flimsy - 3 kids & a dog = the odd scuff or knock at some stage!!

Looking for a sturdy well built offering with picture/sound & build quality as objectives rather than additional gimmicks/functionality.
I had looked at cheaper Panasonic plasmas (S10 for eaxample) & wasn't overly impressed with picture quality versus Samsungs/LG units. However, once I saw the G20 range on display, the picture quality was superb. In the end plugged for a 46in model...have to say, straight out of the box, the picture quality is stunning. We have SKY HD, so no need to use freesat at present. Sport coverage is fantastic - no discernable blurring at all and the grass looks like real grass, not like it has been drawn with a green highlighter pen, as some seem to. Chinese GP also a joy to watch. Sound quailty is very acceptable for a TV unit....far less tinny than others I tried. Also use in conjunction with a Pioneer BluRay/surround.....even reproduction of DVD material is stunning, let alone BR discs.
Non HD TV also very good.

The unit itself is relatively thin & does not seem to produce much heat after being used for a few hours & power consumption seems reasonable.

Overall, there are most certainly cheaper models out there but for me, the extra outlay was well worth it for picture, build quality and sound. Well done Panasonic!

After so much research and nearly buying the previous generation to this (G10) then holding off for the G20 launch, I'm glad I waited. The picture on this is frankly superb even in a room with light walls and lots of daylight. In the dark, blu-ray on, and you will see so much more than you thought possible. THX mode is an absolute must - once you use it, other TV's will look too bright/dark/dull/vivid. Sport (HD) is lovely and the set handles all movement brilliantly.

    Best bits:
    *Thin and very well built
*No fans, good sound (invest in surround if you're buyng this TV)
    *Awesome picture

Less than perfect points (but still ok):
*600 htz is a lie, the panel is 50 htz. Switch on 600 Htz for sport and it is glorious. If its on for anything else, it's rubbish: characters randomly walk as if speeded up (as seen in old silent films) and movement is jerky.
    * Flicker - you're unlikely to notice this but I (and my house mate) do. Some people have a very high sensitivity to screen flicker due to refresh rates (think CRT computer screens when viewed from the corner of your eye). Other people don't see any flicker on any screen. This flicker is ONLY noticeable when there is a large patch of pure white on screen (think 1/6th of whole screen) AND you have high sensitivity. I have only seen it once in many pleasurable hours of viewing SD TC, HD TV, DVD, and Blu-Ray.
