Smart Viera from Panasonic in 2012 is about redefining the way we use TV in a modern age. Up to now TVs have been all one-way devices. The new generation of TVs are not just for viewing content provided by the major broadcasters at a time which suits their broadcast schedules. Smart Viera allows you to interact with the TV and access a wide selection of digital content at a time that suits you. Content that is provided by the Internet such as catch-up TV or movies on demand. Content that is stored on your computer or other storage devices in your home, like external Hard Disc Drives or memory stick/card. What about sharing content that friends bring to your home, such as pictures, music or videos? No problem with the new Viera App for tablet or smart phone devices.
Introducing Swipe & Share. Using your home Wi-Fi network and an Android or Apple smart phone, simply swipe treasured pictures or video content* to your Smart Viera. Share the moment on your large screen in great picture quality. With a swipe of your hand, you can also throw web pages from your smart device to the TV. Thanks to the built-in web browser, internet pages that you are browsing on your smart phone can be displayed on the TV for everyone to see.

*Skype calls require Skype account and purchase of optional Skype camera.
However you choose to enjoy this new world of entertainment, Panasonic build all their TVs around the following five pillars of form and functionality.
Picture & Sound Quality
Brilliant Motion Clarity with 2000Hz Focus Field Drive (FFD)
The ability to create its own light from within each cell gives Plasma the edge when it comes to displaying fast motion on screen. Plasma screens create each image thousands of times faster than even the very latest LED LCD technology. Panasonicâs proven 600Hz Sub Field Drive technology gets improved for 2012 with the addition of very fast impulse emission technology able to virtually pack all light within each frame in 1/2000th of a second. Thatâs an impulse speed of 0.5ms. The benefit of this phenomenal speed is that any motion that takes place between each frame can be calculated and accurately predicted for a much smoother and detailed display on screen.
Videos created for viewing on the internet are often not made to the same standard as videos or films made for TV broadcasting. The web conversion process can cause unnatural motion or blur. The Viera web smoother technology reprocesses the video content creating a smoother and sharper image to watch.
Full HD 3D Picture Performance
For the majority of the time you will be enjoying stunning 2D picture quality from your UT50 TV which is made all the better if the source is High Definition, such as Freeview HD or Blu-ray Disc. These HD video signals are made up of picture frames containing 1920 x 1080 pixels (about 5 times more pixels than standard definition), what the industry calls âFull HDâ. Switching to a Full HD 3D source such as 3D Blu-ray adds a whole new level of enjoyment that should be engaging and immersive. You would not want the amazing quality of Full HD to be compromised just because you want to watch in 3D, would you?
The UT50 series all offer Full HD 3D picture quality by the use of âFrame Sequential Active 3Dâ. Frame sequential 3D is the only way to deliver 1920 x 1080 images to each eye ensuring that High Definition 3D quality is guaranteed.
2D to 3D Conversion
If you get hooked on 3D but canât find enough 3D content to satisfy your urge, donât worry. You can convert 2D images in to natural looking 3D. Achieve natural and beautiful 3D images with this advanced conversion technology. In addition to 2D TV broadcasts, it is also possible to enjoy recorded TV programmes, Blu-ray software, and memorable photos and videos recorded onto SD Memory Cards, all converted to amazing 3D.
V-audio Surround Sound 2.1
The virtual pro surround system not only adds a surround effect to the back of the listener, but also expands the sound space into three-dimensions with additional Digital Reverb processing incorporating the TVs own subwoofer.
As the multimedia powerhouse of your home, VIERA Connect gives you easy access to selected online content. Utilising the latest "Cloud technology", dozens of internet applications are available for you to access without the need of a PC. The Viera Connect Apps are automatically downloaded to your connected TV, all you have to do is take a look in the Viera Market section of Connect and install the ones that you fancy. The apps are even updated automatically in the background without you having to wait for the update to install.
The UT50 series include optional Wireless technology (requires purchase of Panasonic TY-WL20E Wi-Fi dongle) or a wired built-in Wi-Fi technology or an Ethernet connection allowing easy link up to a Broadband router. Viera Connect provides fast connection to a wide selection of services including Catch-up TV, News & Lifestyle, Weather, Sports, Music and Gaming to name a few.

I've had this TV for 2 weeks now and have used it with varying appliances, it's a beautiful product and sits well in my living room.
SD SKY - The TV auto up scales all SD sources and together with the 2500Hz Focus Field Drive creates quite simply the best SD image I've seen on a 1080p screen, even on channels with questionable quality, like CBS look pretty good. Default colour settings are vivid and blacks are very deep. If you have a film on a pen drive you can just plug and play using the TVs USB connections, again the picture quality is very good, better than on my laptop.
Gaming - I have a PS3, 360 and Wii connected. The PS3 and 360 are connected via the TVs 2 HDMI connections (Only 2 ??? !!!) image quality is breathtaking, on connecting them they both auto detected the screen size and settings. 3D gaming is very good, lots of depth and scope, good colours and smooth motions. Online gaming is very good as the TV has a very low response time of around 15ms, compared to the likes of LG TVs (50-60ms) and Toshiba TVs (up to 120ms) this is the online gaming display of choice, anything over 35ms can begin to affect online play, especially on games like Modern Warfare 3.Read more ›
Because of my experience with the previous Panasonic model, my decision to finally go 3D with them wasn't difficult.
They do seem to manufacture beautiful televisions (if a tv can be described as being beautiful). Very well made and with fantastic picture quality. The only negative about my previous model was audio. In that instance it would seem that Panasonic had put a great deal of effort into producing amazing picture quality, but hadn't really bothered too much about sound.
About a week ago I decided to buy the PANASONIC TX-P50UT50B 3D PLASMA TV and I'm so glad I did.
Having said that, I only installed it yesterday afternoon, so I'm unable to give a detailed review at the present time. As with my previous tv, the picture quality is still fantastic. Pin sharp HD with beautiful, rich colors. Audio on this model isn't amazing, but it's more than adequate and much better than that on my previous model.
Not particularly taxing to install and set up, I had it switched on in no time.
Being a 3D tv, it was that that I wanted to test more than anything else, so, using a Blu-Ray called "Ocean Circus 3D", I sat down hoping to be blown away.
I should just mention that any 2011/2012 'active' 3D glasses can be used with this tv, not those by Panasonic exclusively, so I used some cheaper ones manufactured by Samsung. So far, they would seem to be absolutely perfect.
The 3D was amazing and I was blown away.Read more ›
I browsed various sites and shopped around looking at all brands before finally deciding on the Panasonic TX-P50UT50B from John Lewis who supplied a free 5 year warranty and also matched Tesco price at the time of £575 :-) i fitted the TV on a wall mount which has the TV about 5 ft from my living room window which i don't find a problem how people go on about reflections maybe its the fact its wall mounted and sat a few ft higher than eye viewing level ?
The TV out of the box i wasn't 100% sure about the picture at all too start with as the settings was far out on my final preferences but once i spent loads time keeping adjusting them i finally really like the TV the picture is excellent really standing out when using HD content far better than my previous Sony did before problems occurred with it, The Smart features work very well with apps such as BBC iPlayer working in HD looked and it run very well though i thought the actual design and style of the Smart TV menus needed some update as it just looked a little basic and in need of some more style in my opinion.
There's the current TV program in the centre and 8 apps around that ( there are more apps to choose from on different screens )
The TV also has support for SD and USB memory sticks which support media format and work no problems from what i tried out on it, I used AVI, MP4 and MKV all which run fine and ive yet too try anything that isn't supported.Read more ›
