I spent a long time reading reviews from owners of TVs and also a couple of the more technical reviews before taking the plunge and spending my hard earned cash. I was looking for a receiver of around 40", not too concerned whether LCD or Plasma although I gather that both have their merits. I wanted to spend no more than around £400 and finally opted for this model. I have been using it now for a week and have to say that I am very impressed. It was incidentally purchased to replace an excellent but huge Philips CRT. A friend of mine who owns a top of the range Sharp Aquos says that the Philips sometimes looked like it was receiving HD transmissions via Sky (non HD) or when watching DVDs. It was certainly excellent (I have a new smaller Samsung LCD also for comparison also) and so the new Panasonic had a fair standard to live up to.
I think that the Panasonic Plasma is excellent and I'm very pleased with the purchase. I use it for Sky reception (still non HD) and watching DVDs and some old tapes. I have never played a video game in my life and don't intend to, and so performance of this medium I can't comment on. The picture is pretty much as good as I've seen and the sound is also excellent (compares well with the Philips CRT which had huge, deep speakers) - note that the speakers are forward facing on the Panasonic, rather than downward or rear facing as with many LCD models. There are numerous settings available for picture and sound and I'd be amazed if the typical viewer was unable to find settings to their satisfaction. The colours tend to be slightly muted compared to my Samsung LCD and this I prefer, it looks more natural. The set is also very solid and well made, the rear panel is metal rather than plastic as with many other TVs, particularly at the lower end of the price range. The stand is very solid, again with a metal/steel upright section and so the receiver sits very securely.
One point of interest to potential buyers - it has only one Scart socket (although numerous other connections) and some owners on the web have commented that they have had problems connecting both a standard (non HDMI) Sky box AND a DVD recorder/player. I followed the configuration instructions that came with the Panasonic handbook and it all works absolutely fine, no need for Scart switches or anything complicated. Double check that your Scart connections are as advised if you're having problems - Sky Box out to the DVD recorder, recorder out to the TV.
My only criticism is that the glass screen does suffer reflections in bright sunlit rooms. I am used to this to some extent as my previous CRT TV has a glass screen also, but it can be distracting in bright daylight. This is the only reason why I've not given the Panasonic 5 stars. Otherwise this is an excellent TV set and really good value for money, highly recommended.
