Pansonic 2008 TVsTHE VIERA MISSION 2008
When Panasonic first introduced their award-winning VIERA range of televisions, the aim was to give consumers the pinnacle of a viewing experience – an experience so real, so true-to-life, that viewers would unwittingly feel themselves to be almost part of the on-screen action. Now in 2008, the year of the summer Olympic Games, no other company is better placed and able to deliver every second of the action from the stadia into your living room than Panasonic. Panasonic has been responsible for relaying the Olympics to our homes for the past 20 years. Since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Panasonic has exclusively provided professional broadcast cameras, editing consoles, monitors, and recording media to the international Olympic Broadcast Centres which beam images of the games around the world. 2008 will mark the first time that the entire production of an Olympic games will be done in High Definition – meaning that viewers will be able to experience all the events with unparalleled clarity and crispness thanks to Panasonic technology. Thanks to Panasonic HD technology and the highly developed motion technologies in our VIERA TVs, millions of people around the world will be able to follow the ceremony and the proceeding games as intensely as if they were there in person – without missing a moment!

Full 1080p HD TV

FUL-HD PANELS

HD Signal Quality Directly Reflected in Picture Quality With its 1920 x 1080p resolution, VIERA Full-HD panel displays beautiful images without needing to perform pixel conversion for the 1080p video signals processed by the video circuitry. Panasonic offers the full-HD panel in 32-inch and larger models. You can enjoy images with stunning detail and beauty not only from HD broadcasts, but from Blu-ray and HD Gaming sources as well.

VReal image processing

V-Real

All VIERA TVs are equipped with the Panasonic award-winning V-Real picture technology which perfectly optimises the performance of the display panel to render smooth, crystal-clear motion without compromising on delicate colours with rich graduation. Our 2008 models are equipped with V-Real PRO 3 for Full HD, and V-Real 3 for HD-Ready TVs.

IPS LCD Panels

IPS ALPHA PANELS

Many LCDs suffer from colour wash-out when not viewed from directly in front – a big problem if you have a large family trying to watch a film together. However the latest generation of IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology, manufactured in-house by Panasonic, builds on years of experience with industry leading wide viewing angle technology, providing an unrivalled LCD TV viewing experience. New generation (or "alpha") IPS provides the widest viewing angle possible with the least colour washout, even when viewed from the side. Our LCD panels are built on the strengths of IPS by delivering faster response time and reproducing intense realistic deep black levels and contrast ratios, especially when employed with Panasonic Intelligent Scene Controller technology.

178 Degree Viewing angle

WIDE 178 DEGREE VIEWING

VIERA LCD IPS alpha panels have a viewing angle of 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally, eliminating faded images that can occur by viewing the panel from certain seating positions. The extra-wide viewing angle makes VIERA LCDs perfect when watching TV with the entire family or a group of friends.

24P Playback

24P PLAYBACK - 24P REAL CINEMA

When reproducing a 24p movie source, the 24p Real Cinema function generates smooth motion transition based on the original 24 frames. Models that do not include 24p Real Cinema are equipped with 24p Playback. The 24p Playback function provides cinema-like images by using a pull-down up to 96Hz.

Firstly, I was recommended the Samsung range as being the best buys at the moment with Panasonic being the other make at the top of the game at the moment. I compared the two makes side by side with a Sky HD feed and to me, the Panasonic was clearly ahead on picture quality. For me, that put it as the best picture I could currently find on the market at July 2008.
That left me with a choice of the two models at this price point being the TX-37LZD80, or the TX-37LZD85 for a couple of hundred pounds more for the 100hz picture feature, which is for improving the horizontal movement in fast action situations such as football or rugby. I watched Wimbledon for a while and concluded that I couldn't see any difference. Maybe if I was a sports fanatic I might pay the extra just so as not to kick myself further down the line, but as I'm not, and I really couldn't detect any difference, I saved myself some money and bought the LZD80. The guy in the shop confessed that he has never been able to see any difference either.
Getting the TV home and setting it up was a piece of cake, and in the standard picture mode it is just breathtaking. If I thought the picture quality in the shop was good, then in a home environment sitting on the sofa the brilliance of this TV goes up again by a huge margin.
My previous TV was an LG first generation HD ready 32" and is only 3 years old, but the leap in technology in that time is quite astonishing.
The Panasonic has a great feature which is the cinema picture setting, which for films just replicates the cinema screen to a tee. For films, you'll just be there. It is so unexpected and clever that I just laughed the first time I saw it.
One thing you will need to bear in mind is that you don't buy a TV capable of this quality and feed it a poor signal. If you fail to buy the best HDMI lead you can, capable of true 1080p bandwidth, then you are cheating yourself. Spend the £50 on a QED HDMI-P 1.0 metre cable and you'll be in heaven. If you're not prepared to spend that on a cable, you might as well buy a lesser TV, and if you've only seen the results of the wire the Sky installer gave you for free, then you haven't seen anything yet.
For me, this Panasonic TX-37LZD80 is just about as good as it gets currently, and at the price that Amazon are doing it, frankly there's nothing to think about.
I bought mine not on price, but after finding the best TV picture quality I could find after comparing the best. The price here is a bonus. The price in Comet where I did my comparisons and bought this TV was around £900 with a crappy surround sound system lobbed in. I should have bought it here, but it's so good, I can't complain.

It's so sharp! 5 May 2008
Okay, well maybe this review should be taken with a pinch of salt as I've only had the TV for three days...

The colours just ooze from the screen. The 37inches are more than enough for my lounge, so goodness knows why anyone needs anything bigger. Seriously, I've never seen anything look this good. I was considering a Sony LCD, but for the money, this is much better value. (If you have a certain credit card you'll get a 5% discount at another web retailer... make sure you look around for a good price - I got mine for a little over seven-hundred!)

Obviously you need to be using Hd sources to make the most of this TV. Hook up your Playstation 3 to witness some of the best clarity ever... games and BluRay movies look awesome... been playing Tekken, Assassin's Creed, Heavenly Sword - they look fabntastic! Can't wait for Wipeout HD to be released in May '08!
(Note: Don't be foolish enough to buy a fifty-quid HDMI cable... I bought one for under a tenner on Amazon and it's perfect.)

Freeview looks good... obviously it's not sharp like HD sources, but considering I've had a CRT for 5 years without a digibox, I'm happy! Standard DVDs look good too (up-res'ing them through the PS3 works well... although it's obviously not as good a BluRay.)

Sound is very good, but it does lack a slight punch.. or bass to be exact... to be honest I need to get a home cinema set-up. However, it's not essential, the VIVA surround option works very well.

Looks great too, much better than it's older brother (37LZD70)... just remember to give it a light clean now and again - it gets warm and attracts dust. The stand comes supplied, thankfully, but you'll need to buy a wall-mount seperately if you want to hang it (and that's not cheap.)

Anyway, like I said after three days I'm delighted. But with any TV, unless you're going to take advantage of HD (such as a PS3 or SkyHD) you might as well stick with your CRT until the prices drop. (When this first came out, it cost a grand... and whatever you do, don't buy it from the high-street because they're still charging that much!)

Oh, and if you're not hanging it - make sure you get a decent stand to match it!

Had one of these from another internet supplier. However, had a fault with one of the scart sockets and they had sold out of item and could not replace so I got my money back and ordered from Amazon.

Picture superb even on SD pictures. Blu Ray is amazing there are no words top describe how fantastic the picture is. Amazing colours and extra crisp picture quality.

Forget the reviews about black levls! This TV black levels to me are excellent and much better than my three year old Toshiba 32" LCD.
The sound is far superior to that of most LCD flat screen TV's and is really excellent all round.

In a nut shell, buy it you will not be dissapointed and it will blow your mind away.

Easy to set up and change picture settings to your liking.

Just buy it!!
