The HM-TA1 is a new-genre HD mobile camera with pocket-size dimensions and exceptional mobility. Small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, the TA1 slips easily into a pocket or a bag for both full-HD video recording and high-quality photo shooting -- any time and any place.
Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) Recording and Still Image Capture
Even with its compact, palm-size body, the TA1 records full-HD (1,920 x 1,080/30p) videos with superb picture quality. You can even cut out and save a still image by simply pressing the Still Picture button right when the desired image appears on the TA1’s LCD monitor.* This ensures that you’ll never miss that perfect shot again.
Importing movies is fast and and file sizes are small. You can edit and upload right away.
iFrame Mode
The TA1 lets you record movies with iFrame. When using iMovie, the iFrame video data in your camera is the same format as the one you’ll be using to edit, so importing is fast and file sizes are small. You’ll be able to edit and upload movies to the internet and portable devices right away. iFrame is based on standards, so it works with compatible PC and Mac applications, such as Apple iMovie and PC applications.
Fight hand-shake to record crisp, clear images
The E.I.S. (Electrical Image Stabilizer) system helps to correct the kind of handshake blurring that often happens with compact cameras. Record all the images you want, whether you’re shooting while walking or taking self portraits, without having to worry about blurring.
4x Digital Zoom and LED Light for Shooting in Dim Locations
The TA1 zooms up to 4x, making it easy to capture faraway subjects and expand the user's range of creative expression. The built-in LED lets you capture bright, crisp images even in dark situations, like indoors or during night time events.*
Effect with Sepia/Monochrome/Soft Skin
The TA1 offers three effect modes. The Soft Skin mode produces beautiful skin tones. The Sepia mode adds warmth to the captured images. And the Monochrome mode transforms the appearance of images to create a cool ambience. By selecting one of these modes, the user can add a unique effect to suit the shooting purpose.
SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card Recording
The TA1 uses an SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card as recording media. These solid-state recording devices are highly resistant to external impact and allow instant recording. Also, since the memory card can be removed from the camera body and carried around, recorded images can be easily shared with family and friends. This media is also ideal for transferring data to a PC.
Connect the TA1 to a PC and … it’s a web camera.
Works with Skype
The TA1 is compatible with Skype,* the video call service. You can talk face to face with faraway family and friends. Go ahead, try some visual communication with the TA1.
Quick PC Connection with a Built-in USB
When the TA1 is connected to a PC via the USB terminal, recorded images can then be loaded into a PC for playback, editing and uploading. Plus, the TA1 can upload videos directly to YouTube™ or Facebook, without having to launch a browser. When e-mail software such as Outlook Express is registered in advance, an e-mail message with the URL for the uploaded video page already attached is automatically launched, making it easy to send e-mails to family and friends to notify them of the uploaded page.
USB Charging and USB Bus Power
Charging the battery is as easy as connecting the TA1's USB terminal to a PC.* This eliminates the need to carry a separate cord or adaptor. The battery can be charged anywhere with an available PC. The TA1 is also USB bus-powered. When using the battery, power is automatically supplied from the PC as soon as the TA1 is connected to it with a USB cable to enable quick and easy video playback and editing with the PC, even in places where there is no external power supply.
*Still images cannot be cut out while shooting a video. The size of the cutout still image is the same as that of the video image.
*The LED light does not go on when operating in web cam mode.
*The use of a high-performance CPU is recommended for video conferencing with high-quality images.
*Do not use any USB extension cord other than the supplied one (Operation is not guaranteed with any other USB extension cord.)

I purchased this after comparing lots of different 'small' camcorders and I wasn't disappointed.
Despite some mentioning that the unit feels to have flimsy covers I still think that it is a great little unit and I personally don't think it feels too flimsy.
I have a full sized hd camcorder, but wanted something to keep in my bag and this is great for that.
On full hd resolution I only get 40 minutes of recording on a 4gb card, which I feel is quite low, but I find the quality is still good on the lower settings, where I can get up to 2 1/2 hours.
Whilst I wouldn't recommend it for recording a full holiday, as a camcorder to have on hand to record those 'moments' in life, I find it is one of the best I have seen and does the job perfectly.

This is Panasonics answer to the FLIP Video and it surpasses and falls short at the same time. First, the quality of the videos is remarkable. Automatically set at the highest default of 1920 X 1080, on a 4GB card you can record 40 minutes. With an 8GB card, you can record 1 hour and 20 minutes. Honestly, unless you are making a movie project, keep it at the high default, as shorter videos tend to be less boring. The 'menu screen' is very intuitive for both Video and Camera. The camera settings should always be at 8M (8 megapixels/the default) which will give a perfectly fine quality photo. A poster it won't make, but a 10 X 12 is easily possible. The software is very easy to use and one of the best features is the capability to record a video and come back later and extract an individual shot from motion. When taking pictures in low light, there is a button that turns on a bright light that is alarmingly effective. Playback of video and photos is clean, crisp and easy on a nice screen the same size as a Flip Video's. The special effects function allows you to record in 'monochrome', 'sepia' or 'soft skin'. Another very cool feature for real electronic buffs is that this camera has SKYPE capabilities, so if you plug it onto your computer Playback of video and photos is easily done on a good size screen (same size as a Flip Video) you can talk to other SKYPE users.
Now for the not so great features - the construction of the camera. There are three access panels on the sides of the camera for:
1) Battery and SDHC card
2) An external A/V port
3) The USB port for access to your computer.
These are thin plastic pieces that attach only with a thin plastic loop and can easily break. Once in place, they are secure, but this is probably the biggest flaw.
Having to use an external cord to connect the USB port to your computer is just an extra unneeded hassle, but then again, I've been concerned about hanging a Flip Video on a horizontal USB computer port. Like most compact video/cameras, there is a mono microphone and speaker. Not a big deal.
Other important points to make is that you really need an (Secure Digital High Capacity) SDHC card Transcend 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6. This guarantees the ultimate in quality and performance. This is the only item not included in the package and they are not cheap.
Watching your videos and photos on your television (flat screen is awesome) or computer is a thrill when you witness the clarity. I do enjoy this camera and feel guilty to give it only 3 stars, but the construction of the access doors, the extra cord for computer connection and the non-inclusion of an SDHC card were the tipping points. Considering the price, it can still be considered a bargain. I suspect Panasonic will release a newer version that will blow away the competition.

Bought this for up coming step daughters wedding, wanting a pocket camcorder with instant start, hd, and SD slot.
Given the price, I was very impressed with the picture quality, on full HD but also lesser resolutions. What I did not expect was the still camera quality, for 5 mp it was excellent as a quick snap camera. Add to this iFrame format and I am very impressed.
