Manufacturer's Description

Panasonic SDR-S70 SD Camcorder

Using an SDXC, SDHC, or SD Memory Card for recording media, the compact SDR-S70 is ideal for daily use. Its superb resistance to external impact combines to give this versatile camcorder easy portability for anytime, anywhere video fun. Video clips recorded on an SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card can be played by simply inserting the card into the card slot of a Panasonic VIERA* TV. * MPEG-2 compatible models with an SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card slot. JPEG format still images can be viewed with other card slot-equipped models.

Powerful Enhanced Optical 78x Zoom

This compact camcorder features a powerful 70x optical zoom lens with an Enhanced Optical 78x Zoom function that uses the effective area of the CCD to further extend their zooming power at the wide-angle setting. This makes it possible to capture beautiful images of sweeping landscapes and pull in distant subjects for truly dynamic close-ups.

O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) guarantees beautiful images even when shooting on the move or zooming.

Advanced O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer)

Because hand-shake becomes increasingly noticeable with more powerful zooming, an optical image stabilizing function is essential for suppressing hand-shake and providing clear zoom shots without degradation. This is where Advanced O.I.S. comes in. It detects and corrects hand-shake at a rate of 4,000 times per second, to provide stable images while zooming. Plus, the addition of an Active mode produces clear, blur-resistant images even when shooting while walking.

iA (Intelligent Auto) with AF/AE Tracking
iA (Intelligent Auto) with AF/AE Tracking tracks a moving subject to make sure that it continues to be recorded in optimal image quality.

33mm Wide-angle Lens

The 33mm* wide-angle setting is especially convenient when shooting video indoors or in tight spaces. It makes it possible to shoot at a close distance from the subject while fitting both the subject and the surrounding area into the frame. This has the added benefit of allowing the voice of the subject to be clearly recorded, which is an important element in video recordings. The wide-angle setting captures beautiful images of wide landscapes and allows large groups of people to fit into the frame * 35mm-lens equivalent.

iA (Intelligent Auto) with AF/AE Tracking

The iA function includes an AF/AE Tracking feature that tracks a moving subject to make sure that it continues to be recorded in optimal image quality. An Intelligent Contrast Control, which automatically adjusts brightness to maintain the best possible contrast, has also been added to the five advanced functions from previous models, including Face Detection, Advanced O.I.S., and Intelligent Scene Selector, and each is activated as required by simply pressing the iA button to capture beautiful images under virtually all shooting situations.

I looked long & hard before buying this camcorder, reading reviews, trying various cameras in shops & seeking advice from others and I am quite happy with my choice. I looked at the version with built in hard drive but found that uncomfortable to hold, even with my large hands.
The controls are easy to use & the 'instant on' when you open the screen is great. The zoom is amazing but needs a steady hand. Picture quality is good, quite watch-able on a 32" TV screen.
I'm also impressed with the still picture quality from what is a relatively small CCD, I've even used it in macro & it managed a better close picture than my 7Mpix still camera.
Pre-record is good for capturing events that start suddenly as it captures the 3 seconds before you hit the record button.
I used the camera recently at an all-day motor racing event & still had battery life when I got home. I've added a 16Gb SDHC card which gives me 8 hours of recording time.

Generally don't like to complain but thought I must comment on this product. Enticed to buy this by the price and a past history of satisfaction with Panasonic products. Well even though it was very cheap it got sent back pretty quickly. The quality of the video was very poor, fuzzy and grainy in a small window on a computer screen let alone playing back on a full size television. Even selecting the best quality setting made very little improvement. There are several examples of video from it on YouTube and this is the only place it is useful for small screen video uploads. Must admit that the zoom is fantastic as you can see on YouTube as well but can't compensate for poor quality video. To put it in context the video that I can take on my Olympus digital camera is better quality.

Nice compact Camcorder with fanastic zoom and wide angle lens. I have not been able yet to find a small enough cover for the camera that I can clip to my belt. But on the whole a very good product from Panasonic

Brilliant. Took a friend's to South Africa where I was able to get brilliant wild life pictures & videos using the x78 zoom. Bought one immediately on return. Very lightweight. Not too bulky. Have recommended to many friends. Best for videos but photos still of a very good standard.

Do not buy this item if you want a Camcorder which lasts. Mine malfunctioned two months out of guarantee and the cost of repair is almost as much as the item itself

Panasonic SDR-S70
I wish I hadn't taken notice of the good reviews of this Camcorder because after using mine for a few days from new, I was very disappointed with its performance.

First off, the manual doesn't tell you anywhere how to STOP a video. It only says press the REC button to start recording, and then press it again to "Pause" the recording. This is because the default setting which you can't change is a configuration that makes the camera "chain" your recordings into one long linked up mass of videos.

To stop a video I discovered that you have to press and hold the Rec button for about 2 seconds and then the Pause sign turns from red to green and the movie you were recording stops and the thing lets go. That was a serious omission from the badly written manual. So poor marks for that part.

POOR COLOUR
On days with no sunshine, and with the camera set to "intelligent auto", the videos have a nasty purple bias. The stabilizer doesn't seem to help much and movies still look jerky thereby proving that the stabilizer doesn't really damp much movement at all. Filming a sequence of about 20 seconds while walking along as smoothly as I could the video was still jerky enough to be unsettling to view.

The files that this camera makes are those wretched .MOD compressed files like you used to get in JVC camcorders with hard discs in them. They have to be renamed to .mpg or .wmv and then imported into a program like Windows Live Movie Maker, and then re saved as .wmv - then the movies will import into a better editing suite like the older Windows Movie Maker 2.6 where they can be edited /shortened/ cut /brightened up/ etc etc.
