Manufacturer's Description

Panasonic HDC-SD80 Superzoom Camcorder

The Panasonic HDC-SD80 HD Camcorder covers a wide range of shooting situations from close distances to faraway subjects. Using Intelligent Zoom that employs super-high resolution technology and the Crystal Engine PRO, it offers ultra-telephoto Intelligent Zoom shooting to exceed the magnification range of the optical zoom, up to a high-powered 42x zoom. It also features a 33.7mm* wide-angle lens. to realise shooting at a close distance from the subject while fitting both the subject and the surrounding area into the frame. * 35mm camera equivalent.

New HYBRID O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
New HYBRID O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) guarantees beautiful images even when shooting on the move or zooming.

HYBRID O.I.S.

The Panasonic SD80 boasts HYBRID O.I.S; an optical/electrical image stabilization system. Further to blurring by vertical/horizontal wrist movements, it detects subtle blurring by vertical/horizontal entire arm movement and corrects them using a lens in the optical system and a sensor in electrical system. In electrical image stabilization, utilizing an unused area of the sensor when zooming, suppresses image degradation. Powerful correction realizes beautiful images even when shooting on the move or zooming.

Zoom Mic and Wind Noise Canceller

The evolved Zoom Mic links the microphone's action to the camera's action. When zooming in on a bird in the distance, for example, the microphones also zoom in on the bird in link with the lens zooming operation. The function also reduces the surrounding noise to about 1/3 (-10 dB)* that of conventional models and realizes recording the sounds with superb clarity. The Wind Noise Canceller automatically detects and suppresses only wind noise to ensure natural sounds. *In comparison with 2ch camcorders (SD600/TM60/HS60/SD60).

iA (Intelligent Auto)

iA (Intelligent Auto), consists of six functions: Face Recognition, new HYBRID O.I.S., AF/AE Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Intelligent Contrast Control, senses the shooting conditions and automatically makes the settings and activates functions that will deliver optimal results. With both motion and still images, iA does the bothersome settings for you and makes it easy to capture beautiful, well-focused images. The functions included in iA may not be applied when conditions do not call for them.

After having a look online at countlees different models of HD camcorders, i settled for the panasonic SD80. It seemed to have everything i needed from a HD camcorder without being too exspensive and without too many gadgets or gimmicks that i would never use or even understand! The quality is amazing, its touch screen is responsive and easy enough to use with the on screen menu options, its quite light, battery is ok, interface with other devices is straight forward enough and its quick power on/off feature is great for catching spur of the moment videos.
    Great product, would recommend.

Panasonic SD80 Full HD Camcorder - Black (SD Card Recording, x42 Intelligent Zoom, x37 Optical Zoom, Wide Angle Lens & iA + Face Recognition & New Hybrid OIS)

An exceptionally lightweight camcorder - this is a plus and a minus.
Picture quality very good, relatively simple to set up and operate - almost worth a 5 Star review. The ability to easily select video shots and save good quality jpg still shots, using the supplied software is a welcome feature. Zoom is effective and high quality results, at maximum zoom, can be achieved - the image stabilisation works well.

What prevents me from giving it 5 stars?
    1. Its very lightness means that is is difficult to use some controls without shaking the camera.
    2. The LCD display is rather small and could be brighter.
    3. The touch screen facilites, with the small screen format, can be difficult to both read and use whilst the camera is in operation.
    4. The lens cover opens when switched on, but does not close when switched off.
    5. When using AUTO mode neither the Mic nor the in-built LED subject illumination light can be disabled (low light use).
    6. No "Quick Start" guide supplied, only a full manual. There is a pdf Quick Start guide available on the Panasonic site.

All in all, despite some negative comments, a good camera at a good price.

The Panasonic HDC-SD80 is what I would describe as a good starter camcorder, ideal for those moving over from a standard definition camcorder or for those wanting their first one. It has little to recommend over the lower models in the range other than the high optical zoom, which is the reason I purchased this.

This has Panasonic's usual superb sharpness of picture and all the colours are defined correctly. So what your eyes see is faithfully represented in your recordings. Some other camcorder brands have very poor colour reproduction and therefore ruin the recordings. Still picture quality is very average and a decent mobile phone will probably take better pictures, but this is usually an area where most camcorders produce poor results. Its a bit unfair that alot of decent modern stills cameras have superb camcorder funtions built in so I think entry level camcorders like the SD80 will suffer as a result. I have a Sony DSC-HX9 stills camera which has superb stills & camcorder quality and probably the best zoom and image stailisation I have seen on any device upto the semi Pro level. And the Sony cost less than the Panasonic.

I would recommend a Panasonic camcorder as they produce superb results, but I would say buy a lower range model or a higher range model depending on your requirements as the only stand out feature of this is the high optical zoom, which is exactly the reason I purchased it, and of which I am very pleased.

There is not too much negative you can mention about this camera. using this for our summer sailing and trip to France has given a new dimension to recording events. If anything the size of the unit gives me a few problems keeping it steady, but that is not specific to this model. With a little practice and with the aid of the steadying system I was able to adapt. Usual problem with the microphone picking up wind noise unless it is dead calm weather. One annoying thing is that the sound of the lens switch finger toggle is picked up when activated. Otherwise a very happy purchase.

BATTERY LASTs QUITE A LONG TIME FOR A CAMCORDER. Item IS VERY LIGHT, child could use in 30 seconds, no learning curve. You get a dvd to load on your computer if you want to download pictures for viewing on pc which is simple to use and most of all works. Like all camcorders and cameras the weakness is always if facing bright light burned out images due to the sensor and associated microelectronics. This item is value for money as far as any electronic item is value for money. Consider this item as something that you can pop into your shirt pocket when not in use as its so small, the results are not bad, so unless you want to pay a great deal of money to get a slightly better picture. I would be satisfied with this item. One minor point is the recordings are saved onto a memory card, this card can simply be inserted into a sd card on a Panasonic blue ray player which are now being sold for a song compared to what they used to cost, the result is the best picture you will get being displayed on your TV screen. One can save to a dvd etc on a computer if wanted but I have found there is always a slight reduction in picture quality as the format is changed.
