Manufacturer's Description

Panasonic HDC-SD40: World's Lightest Camcorder

POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) detects hand-shake and eliminates blurring.

Ultra-compact and weighing only approximately 169g, the HDC-SD40 is the world's lightest* camcorder and has a stylish design. They can be carried anywhere to record high-quality videos at anytime. They do not take up much room in a bag and are light on the arms even after recording for long periods of time. *For a full-HD camcorder in AVCHD format as of January,5 2011. (When using the battery (supplied) and an SD card (optional): Approx. 211 g)

The camcorder has a low power consumption of 2.5 W, allowing it to record continuously for up to 135 minutes. This means you can continue recording without worrying about the remaining battery power. *135 min. of recording time with a fully charged battery (HA mode)

POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)

The POWER O.I.S., which uses gyrosensors to detect hand-shake and moves a corrective lens to adjust the optical axis and eliminate blurring, has further evolved. When the camcorder is handheld, it moves slowly at low frequency due to the breathing of the operator or other reasons, no matter how hard the person tries to hold the camcorder steady. While the conventional O.I.S. system could not sufficiently eliminate this low-frequency hand-shake, the POWER O.I.S. is able to correct it about five times more effectively.

Face Detection
Face Detection captures faces beautifully even in dim or backlit scenes.

Face Detection

Face Detection captures faces beautifully even in dim or backlit scenes. Each of these modes is activated, as required, by simply pressing the iA button. This allows users to capture beautiful, optimized images quickly and easily. Face Detection automatically senses the ambient lighting and adjusts the exposure accordingly. The focus also prioritizes the faces, and skin tones are smoothed for up to 15 faces at once. Faces are bright and recognizable.

iA (Intelligent Auto)

The iA (Intelligent Auto), consists of four functions: POWER O.I.S., Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Intelligent Contrast Control, senses the shooting conditions and automatically makes the settings and activates functions that will deliver optimal results. With both motion and still images, iA does the bothersome settings for you and makes it easy to capture beautiful, well-focused images. The functions included in iA may not be applied when conditions do not call for them. Please note iA mode is effective only when shooting movies.

Worth Every Penny. 31 Aug 2011

After I'd had a cassette camcorder for quite a along time, I've decided to upgrade it, so I bought this one a couple of weeks ago and already put it through the test.

    Pros:
    1. Very light, so your arm is relaxed even after longer shots.
    2. Good sound quality, indoor and outdoor, due to Zoom Mic and Wind Noise Canceller.
    3. Good video quality and O.I.S. I can trust iA Mode when light is good (daylight), but under artificial light I prefer Manual Mode for WB and Shutter Speed. Film, the same as photography, is all about capturing the light. So, the better the subject is lit - the better is the result (or just use better optics, like Panasonic HDC-MDH1). If I film indoors and want to get the best result I usually use 6500K White Daylight light bulb instead of standard light bulbs.
    4. Long battery life, just what they say... With my previous camera I had to buy a spare one.
    5. Simple and intuitive menu, easy to follow display info. It doesn't have touch screen, but menu controls are well-placed and it keeps screen clean.
    6. Fast file transfer to the computer's HD; quite good software, which comes with the camcorder.

    Cons:
    None, so far...

If you've had camcorder before or not, you will enjoy this one.

this camcorder was for my husbands xmas present - he was thrilled with it and was surprised how
small and light it is. he has a video camera which he liked but it was big and clumsy to carry
about - whereas this one is so small he can put it in his coat pocket - he is very impressed
with the results and we take it everywhere.
