Audio Features and Audio Technology

Full Digital Amplifier System

The Full Digital Amplifier System handles all signal processing up to the point of speaker output in digital form. This produces clear sound with minimal distortion. A high-efficiency power circuit also provides a stable power supply and low power consumption. And the main unit is conveniently compact.

Anti-Jitter Digital Amplifier

Based on the phenomenal MASH noise shaping technology used for many years in Panasonic products, the Anti-Jitter Digital Amplifier markedly reduces jitter and distortion that can affect audio clarity, producing pure brilliant sound.

Bamboo Charcoal Speaker Cone

Bamboo is a sustainable material that has great properties for clear audio reproduction when used to replace conventional speaker cone material. By carbonising the bamboo fibres to charchoal, this makes a lighter material that means faster response speed and reduced resonance.

Nanosized Bamboo Speaker
Nanosized Bamboo Speaker
Anti-Distortion Speaker

The Anti-Distortion speaker cone structure features an uneven thickness for the rear surface of the speaker cone. This inspired moulded pattern manufacturing process serves to suppress resonance, producing clear sound and minimising unwanted noise.

D. Bass

Bass sounds are conventionally controlled to match the sound volume. The stereo detects the characteristics of music, and emphasises the frequency band that has the most bass. This preserves the characteristics of the original musical instruments and produces powerful, rich bass sounds.

Connectivity and Networking

DAB & DAB+ Ready

Digital Audio Broadcasts have been with us since 1995 and are currently available in approximately 85% of UK households. However, plans are afoot to upgrade the current DAB service with a new and improved version. No date has been set for the introduction of this new digital radio service, but Panasonic have already begun to include a DAB+ tuner alongside the current DAB tuner in readiness for the switch-over.

MP3 Playback from USB or CD

Music comes from many sources these days. It is easier now to move and share music to more than one player. And the MP3 compression system means that you can compile hundreds of songs in to your own favourite playlist. MP3 music tracks that are burnt to CD or copied to USB memory stick can be played back directly with this Panasonic player so that you no longer are tied to a pre-recorded music collection.

Digital Audio Connection for iPod/iPhone

Panasonic pioneered the iPod Dock for music systems, and now stay one step ahead by introducing a direct digital connection. Most docking systems convert the digital audio playback to analogue which can result in loss of data and introduce unwanted noise. The Digital Dock on Panasonic systems however, maintain the digital signal to the amplifier resulting in a pure and accurate sound reproduction.

Premium Hi Fi Design

Binding Post Speaker Terminals & Removable Speaker Grilles

Binding post terminals are provided that allow the flexibility of upgrading to your preferred grade of speaker cable. Removable front grilles are also provided, reinforcing the fact that the quality and performance of the PMX5 is a cut above most other systems in it's class.

Brushed Aluminium front Panel

The Brushed Aluminium design of the PMX5 suggests a high level of build quality that isn't just limited to the outer casing. The look may hark back to the days when Hi-Fi was built to last, but that's because the PMX5 has a proud heritage to live up to. It's not just great to listen to but it's also a pleasure to look at as well.

I spent many weeks trying to decide which ipod/phone compatable mini-hifi to buy. I needed to replace my 30 year old system with something a bit more user friendly and discreet but without compromising sound quality. I wrote a list and then tried to match with available products and reasonable no particular order
a) DAB radio
b) iphone compatible
c) non-specialist speaker connectors
d) non-specialist aerial socket
e) decent output
f) metal case
h) Well known Brand
i)reasonable reviews on amazon and hifi sites.
j)usb socket

One by one the candidates failed...and I was left with the panasonic. Arrived in 2 days and 15 minutes later was in business. Added a digital aerial, some sturdy speaker stands and heavy duty cable. Also an extension cable for my ipad.

Minor niggles... When playing from USB you cant use MA4 files, and there are no track names just file numbers.
If charging an iphone/pad/pod the readout flasheds "ipod .......charging" annoying if the unit is under the telly.

Overall very pleased and impressed with quality

I think this HiFi is superb but the instruction manual that came with it is poor (just one large sheet of paper). The main reason I got it was to wake me up in the morning with some decent music but details of how the timer worked in all these types of HiFi were sketchy at best. I took a chance and this one does what I hoped for. The Panasonic video mentions AM radio but this isn't present on my version. So I thought I'd do an unboxing video and show you how to set it up and explain a few of the features at the same time. One feature I forgot in the video is an auto-off function - So it is possible to listen to CD at night and half an hour after it finishes the unit automatically goes into standby.
I've had this unit several weeks now and I still like it as much as when I first got it. I can't fault the sound for this size of device but then I'm not one to turn it up to full. I do listen to a wide range of styles all of which it reproduced with clear, well separated sounds.

Very well made, quality hifi, The sound quality is stunning and it's perfect for my small lounge. I have rarely had it on at more than 50% volume so not to upset the neighbours. I think if I put it on full it could blow the doors off :) The iPod/iPhone dock is a bonus.

I've had several DAB radio's in my home over the years and none of them got a decent signal. Reception was patchy at best. The receiver on this was quite good and got 24 stations straight away. I have since upgraded the aerial and now get 40+ stations that are crystal clear. I'm so happy that I can now have DAB in my home.

I owned a Bose Wave Music System II and it was excellent. Superb sound but for some reason it wouldn't recognise my MP3 CD's which was annoying but I dealt with it.

Anyway, I needed some cash so thought I'd sell my Bose system and buy a cheaper music player.
Sold the Bose for £400 and purchased this Panasonic unit for £175 from Amazon Warehouse.

So I was £225 pound better off, and was awaiting delivery for the Panasonic, not expecting it to be as good as the Bose.

It was delivered this morning and I wired it all up. Set-up and tuned in the DAB radio which has great reception.
The radio is so clear and sounds as good as the Bose's radio.

It came to the moment when I tried out my MP3 CD (which I mentioned earlier, wasn't recognised in the Bose), and it worked just fine and sounded AMAZING!!

I am so impressed by the sound quality, especially seeing as I was coming from a £600 Bose.
It honestly sounds just as good, if not better than the Bose!

The system is also more feature full, having a USB port on the front and an iPod dock built in on the top of the unit.
If you want to use headphones, there's a port for that too.

I'm so pleased with this system and wish I purchased first, before being sucked in by Bose's overpriced systems.

If you're in two minds about this, but buy it.

You won't be disappointed.

I couldn't be happier!! :)

Don't often do reviews but this unit is so good, I just wanted to help other people that are trying to decide on a new sound system. I had already spent quite a lot of time visiting the local electrical stores, both smaller independents as well as the larger national outlets but none seemed to have a compact HIFi that sounded good.
Having had other Panasonic equipment in the past and having read the manufacturers blurb, I took the plunge and placed my order. It arrived well protected and was very simple to connect up.
The DAB radio is fantastic! It takes just a few moments to scan all local DAB channels and then you can simply scroll through the list to slect the station you want. It also has the ability to store all your favourite stations and lets you number them in the order you prefer too!
The CD player is very neat with a simple motorised front loading drawer that slides out to accept your CD's. All features can be controlled by the on-unit controls or from the extensive remote hand unit. Information relating to the controls such as Base, Treble, EQ ETC, is all displayed on the scrolling message display.
The really important bit for any sound system of course is, the sound. The quality of the sound that this unit reproduces is PHENOMENAL!!
The speaker system uses a unique construction method which you can read about in the Panasonic info if you want to but really, all you need to to know is the range and quality is beyond belief for a unit of this size.
Tones are rich and silky in the base range whilst being light and crisp in the upper and treble ranges. As for volume? It's a very good job that I'm lucky enough to be in a detached property these days!
