Product Description

Product Description

SC-AP01EB-K – Airplay Wireless Speaker System

Audio Features and Audio Technology

Pure Direct Sound System

Noise cancelling technology has been developed into the audio processor which lets you enjoy direct sound clearly, without the interference of unwanted reflecting sound.

Pure Direct Sound System
Pure Direct Sound System
Direct Vocal Surround

This feature positions the musical instruments in a surround configuration and accentuates the vocals in the centre so you feel enveloped by the vocals. Enjoy the same great ambience as if you were listening to a live performance in an actual concert hall

D. Bass

Bass sounds are conventionally controlled to match the sound volume. The stereo detects the characteristics of music, and emphasises the frequency band that has the most bass. This preserves the characteristics of the original musical instruments and produces powerful, rich bass sounds.

Aero Stream Port

The Aero Stream Port gives you rich, robust bass while controlling distortion.

Nano-sized Bamboo Cone Speaker

Even finer bamboo fibres have been developed for use in the construction of the 2012 cone speaker to reproduce clear, fresh natural tones with minimal distortion.

Connectivity and Networking

Wireless Music Streaming with Apple Airplay

Wirelessly stream music from the iTunes library on your iPad/iPhone/iPod touch or PC/Mac to the stereo and enjoy it anywhere in your home within your Wi-Fi network range. The music is streamed as lossless data, so there is no loss of sound quality from compression. • A wireless LAN environment is required.

Remote Control App for iPhone

By installing a Free Remote Control App onto your iPhone or iPod touch, you can easily operate your device by simply tapping and flicking on your iPhone or iPod touch. In addition to the remote control functions, you can also adjust the equalizer and other sound settings.

USB Port for Charging

For added convenience you can charge your iPad/iPhone/iPod touch via the built-in USB port.

Innovative Slim Design

The super slim style makes it ideal for easy placing on a shelf or cabinet.

I bought this as a cheap Airplay speaker to put on top of the fridge in the kitchen, and seeing how thin it was I knew that weak bass was to be expected - sure enough, anyone looking for loud thumping bass is likely to be disappointed. That aside, sound quality is decent - certain on par for other speakers in this price range.

C. Shepherd's review mentioned some of the issues with the Airplay implementation (i.e. audio lag, a delay in establishing a connection) - but these problems are inherent to all Airplay speakers, which in my opinion are worth putting up with for the benefits that Airplay brings over Bluetooth audio. (Better audio quality, the ability for any network device to access the speaker rather than being limited by Bluetooth range, and so on). If you'r familiar with Airplay technology, you'll find this speaker to be no worse than any other.

Network configuration can be done automatically using WPS (if you're anything like me it'll be the first time you've used it, if your router supports it) - on a device with no display it's by far the easiest way to connect the speaker to your network. If your router doesn't support WPS, putting the speaker into setup mode will broadcast a temporary wireless network which you can connect to using an iPhone/PC/Mac/iPad to access the speaker's setup page. From there you can manually input your WiFi network details.

As mentioned in other reviews, you can control the speaker's volume and tweak various audio settings using the iPhone app from the App Store. Personally I don't find this useful after the initial setup - but it's vital for things like being able to turn off auto-sleep (it's annoying when you want to connect to the speaker only to find it's in standby).

All in all, it's an excellent speaker for the money. If you're specifically looking for something with Airplay support and you don't care about too much bass in your music, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better.

Tesco are still selling this for £170, so the price here is excellent. I purchased mine just before Christmas. Easy to set up, even without WPS on my router. Yes, there is a delay with AirPlay, but that's down to the technology, not this speaker, and it's worth putting up with as the quality is so much better than Bluetooth. Like the app, but would be good if they gave it more functionality. Speaker is good looking, and visitors often comment on it. It is well made, and the sound is much better than I expected. It will never give floor filling bass, but to be honest, in a semi detached house, I would not want it. More importantly , the sound has excellent clarity, with plenty of detail. Well worth a punt, I'm buying another one for upstairs :)

The speaker looks great, it's compact and feels solid. The front is a smooth piece of glass and the base a shaped metal platform. The light at the front indicating connection is discreet and the buttons on the top for power and volume are easy to use.

Sound quality is excellent for a small and light speaker and although there isn't a lot of bass, the sound is good at all levels. I've listened to a variety of genres of music and all sound good.

Setup is a little complicated but that's mainly down to how the instructions are written. It'll take 5 minutes to setup and you're done. My WiFi range is good and as such this has become a speaker often used in the garden (on an extension lead) and in the bedroom.

There's a 3-4 second pause before music plays due to the Air Play link but to stream high quality sound I'm happy with that. I am yet to use the USB connection.

Paired with an iTunes remote app (check out the app store) this is a fantastic speaker to listen to iTunes around the house and garden.

After pondering over this and a Sonos or Bose I went for the Panasonic based on budget. I paid £109 in John Lewis.
It was a doddle to set up and connected to my network first time and was detected by iPad and iPhone.
Its a good choice for the kitchen and looks very smart atop my fridge freezer.
Good points:
Looks, size, ease of set up, reasonable performance and sound quality.
Could be better if:
More base as a little tinny, would have liked an iPad app to control as only available for iPhone/iPod.

If you want to blow the roof off and share your tunes with the neighbours then its not going to impress you.
However if you want a very smart, discreet speaker that is good for background music/airplay streaming then its great value.

Initially it would without problem, was relatively easy to setup and the sound quality was ok. After a couple of weeks it started to drop out (audio) then it would lose the network and had to be reset to factory settings to start over again. These problems became more frequent so it was returned for a refund.

I should say I recieved this at a reduced rate as it was refurbed.
Communication with seller over this issue was excellent so I accepted the offer.
The speaker is easy to set up, instructions simple.
Sound is great, lacking in base a little but for my price or original price I would be happy.
Looks good and really enhances my listening around the house.
No down side just good value for money.

Design is really smart and looks the business.

Sound quality is great, perfect for a fair sized room but will also fill a house.

Airplay on it is great, can't fault it.

At this price you can't go wrong.
