The LUMIX XS1--Slim & Stylish for the Photographer-About-Town

Small enough to slip inside your pocket, the XS1 is the perfect camera for all those unplanned photo opportunities – that beautiful sunset on your way home from work or an unmissable snap of friends on a big night out. Available in a range of 4 different colours including, red, purple, black and white, there is a LUMIX XS1 to suit all personalities.

Panasonic XS1
Super slim and weighing in at only 103 grams.
Super Sleek and Lightweight with Minimum 14mm Thin Design

With its sleek body featuring approx. 17.6mm slimness (approx. 14mm at the thinnest part), the DMC-XS1 is a pleasure to own. This camera is slim enough to slip into a pocket, take it with you everywhere, just like a fashion accessory.

High Quality Pictures with 16-megapixel CCD Sensor

Panasonic's high resolution 16.1 megapixel imaging chip provides high quality pictures with the flexibility to print out large sized photographs or crop into parts of the image while still retaining a good pixel count.

Powerful 5x Optical Zoom Lens

For a camera so slim it seems incredible that a 5x optical zoom lens can be included. But Panasonic's expertise in lens manufacturing means they have cleverly engineered the lens array to provide a 5 times magnification that takes you in close to your subject just when you need it.

Panasonic SZ9
When you need extra width in your shot, the 24mm wide angle lens delivers.
24mm (Equivalent) Wide-angle Lens

The advantage of a wide angle lens, such as the 24mm equivalent included in this camera, is that you can get more subjects in the shot. That's great for indoor use where you may want to photograph a group of friends or for outdoor shots where you want to shoot an amazing landscape or sunset. Either way, you will find the wide angle option adds to your creativity.

Panasonic SZ9
Mega O.I.S. pictures are sharp and blur free even when the shooting conditions are tricky.
Mega Optical Image Stabilisation for Blur-free Pictures

Image stabilisation is essential when taking high zoom pictures without the use of a tripod. Optical stabilisation is the best method as it counteracts the blur that normally occurs by hand holding the camera but does not degrade the image. With Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. pictures are sharp and blur free even when the shooting conditions are tricky.

Panasonic SZ3
Fast focus is essential for catching fast moving objects.
Sonic-speed AF to Catch That Fleeting Moment

The Sonic Speed AF and a quick start-up time help you to quickly focus on moving subjects, such as when you're shooting sports scenes or animals.

2.7 Inch (6.7cm) LCD with High Angle & Auto Brightness Mode

A 2.7 inch LCD is offered that works well in bright light due to the Auto Brightness sensor that automatically increases brightness by up to 40% when in sunny conditions. It also has a "high angle" mode that enables you to still see the image when holding the camera up high.

iA (Intelligent Auto) Shooting Mode

The art of taking interesting photographs is to have a camera that is ready to shoot when the moment arises. iA mode lets you take the picture without you having to worry about what settings to use. The camera intelligently works out the type of scene that you are trying to capture. Whether it is a picture of a person's face (using Auto Portrait mode), a dramatic landscape (using Auto Landscape mode), a close up of a beautiful flower (using Auto Macro mode) or a group of friends (using Auto Face Detection). All the most commonly used shooting scenarios are programmed in to the camera and the camera makes all the internal settings automatically, leaving you to just press the button.

Panasonic SZ9
A selection of creative filter effects can be selected before taking your shot.
Creative Filter Control for Recording

To add an interesting new look to your photos any one of 13 creative filter effects can be selected before taking your shot: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, High Dynamic, Dynamic Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Photo, Impressive Art, One-point Colour, Cross Process and Soft Focus.

Panasonic XS1
Add creative effects to your panorama shooting.
Creative Panorama Shooting Mode with Filter Effects

The Ultra-wide shooting panorama mode not only allows you to capture vast landscapes in one complete picture, but in a Panasonic first, this camera also offers "Creative Panorama" mode which allows you to choose from up to 12 filter effects* that can be applied to your shot.

Multiple Scene Setting Auto Shooting Modes

Up to 18 pre-programmed scene modes can be offered (number varies depending on model) giving you the choice of a wide range of shooting scenarios. Just select the one that best describes the scene you are taking, and the camera makes the best settings automatically.

Panasonic XS1
Recording at 1280 x 720 resolution means your video recordings look great when watched on a compatible HD TV.
HD Video with Motion Jpeg

Sometimes a still picture just doesn't tell the whole story, so it's great to have High Definition video recording available on board your camera. Recording at 1280 x 720 resolution means your video recordings look great when watched on a compatible HD TV or Computer.

USB Charging Function

A USB AC adaptor is included in the box. This convenient accessory enables you to charge the battery inside the camera from any mains power outlet. It is compact and easy to carry around with you giving you a wide number of options to charge up the battery. Alternatively, you can use the supplied USB cable to charge the camera from a USB port on a computer, for example.

*Number of effects varies according to model.

+ It's really tiny, amaxingly so - very convenient to slip in a pocket
+ Battery is good for 200-250+ photos, camera recharges reasonably quickly via USB cable

- Image quality sadly lacking, "mushy" photos
- Button presses in menu navigation sometimes not acted on for up to 10 seconds - this is absolutely *pitiful*, Panasonic.
- Even turned up to the max brightness, screen can be impossible to see in bright sunlight
- Camera will on occasion hang, especially if you are using one of the arty modes. You will need to remove and re-insert the battery as none of the buttons work.

Assuming Panasonic get their act together and fix their firmware, it might actually be an OK camera to use. Until then, either live with the bugs and limitations, or just avoid.

In retrospect, having used it a lot more in the last couple of weeks, I wish I'd avoided.

Ok it is pretty cheap, but overall I feel disappointed as I generally really like Panasonic gear and the stylish Lumix range.

This camera is very slow to recover between shots - not great if you don't want to miss any action. Some pictures look great and full of detail but others are somewhat fuzzy and colour has not been anything to shout about (although I haven't tried it in all conditions yet).

Although I wanted a very small camera that could be slipped into a pocket easily, this camera (along with others this size I imagine) is so slim and light that it is hard to feel like you have got it steady when taking pictures and this might explain some of the fuzzy shots - something that might improve with practice. The power button is particularly tiny and this makes it even more fiddly to power-up which seems to take a while anyway - this kind of negates some of the 'pocket-sized' benefits as you are inclined not to want to turn it off and put it away because the bother of taking it out and turning on sometimes doesn't seem worth it. The extending lens, while not too slow, also adds to this feeling and I would probably go for a camera with a 'hidden' zoom next time I want a super-compact pocket camera.

I bought an external charger and spare batteries as I didn't want the camera to be tied up charging batteries in-situ, but this feature will obviously be very useful on occasion.

Overall I wish I'd spent the money on a different camera.

I like the size and some of the features but I am not too keen on the quality of some of the internal shots it does particularly if there is movement. I bought it for my wife to take photos of our son and you can put in his birthday and it will tell you his age as you take a photo but it does not imprint this on the photo which would have been a better idea. On some settings it is very slow to start up and allow you to shoot - maybe 20 seconds or so, so slow that I have had to avoid one setting all together as the shoot button just does not work until well after "the moment" has passed.

Pros:
Battery rechargeable in camera via USB. Compact size and light, e.g. fits in trouser/shirt pocket so no belt holster needed. Lots of picture presets, e.g. scenery, sunsets, sports action etc.
Cons:
Sluggish - delay between taking pictures. Specs appeared in photos due to dirt being sucked into camera when lens is extended. Seems a common problem with Lumix cameras as several Youtube videos testify. In fact, needed such a video on holiday to instruct me on how to dismantle the camera to remove offending particles. Very fiddly. (Finding and buying the tiny screwdriver required was no mean task in Peru).
I'll be very wary of buying such a Lumix camera again.

It's very small, feels great in the hand and is a magnificent piece of design but unfortunately it's almost impossible to use in bright light (and completely impossible in sunshine). It takes several seconds for a picture to be stored before you can take the next and the quality of the images is acceptable only for web pages and viewing on a mobile. Look at them on a widescreen monitor and they're smeary and over-processed. Incidentally, I also tried the later XS3 version of this camera and it is even worse in terms of image quality.
Having said all this, it's not a bad camera for happy snappers, but anybody who has used Panasonic's more serious cameras will be disappointed.

Main plus for me is the size and weight of this little beauty. It's got some great shooting modes. The menus are very intuitive, which I need! Quality of the photos isn't ground breaking, but more than acceptable. I bought this to replace my Canon Powershot A480, and I am very pleased with it. The photo's are no sharper than the Canon, but I haven't really "played" with it yet, so I will reserve judgement on that. The video mode is excellent too. This camera looks good, feels good and performs good, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a simple budget digital camera. The supplied software is OK, and you get a choice whether to use it as your default program when loading it. So if you're looking for a decent camera that slips into your pocket easily, go for this one. It also comes in white and black if you don't like the red.
